Water Accumulation on Container House Roof

Admin 16 de septiembre de 2026

Water accumulation on the roof of a container house must be addressed promptly; otherwise, it may lead to leaks and damage to the roof structure. The following measures can be taken to resolve the issue:

  1. Clean the Roof
    Removing accumulated water from the roof is the first step. Use soft tools (such as rubber scrapers) to avoid scratching the roofing material. Focus on checking whether the drainage outlets are blocked by leaves, dust, or debris, ensuring that the drainage path is clear. If the drainage outlet design is unreasonable (e.g., insufficient slope), improve drainage efficiency by adjusting the roof support structure or adding deflectors.

  2. Repair Leaks
    Conduct a comprehensive inspection of the roof to locate cracks, damaged waterproof membranes, or areas where the sealant has aged. Use specialized repair materials (such as asphalt-based waterproof coatings or polyurethane sealants) to fill the leaks. The repair area should extend 10-15 centimeters beyond the damaged edge to ensure a tight seal. If the roof covering (such as color-coated steel sheets) is severely rusted, replace the damaged sheets and reapply waterproofing.

  3. Improve the Drainage System
    Design a drainage plan based on the roof area and rainfall:

  • Add Drainage Channels: Install U-shaped or V-shaped drainage channels in low-lying areas of the roof to direct water to the drainage outlets;
  • Lay Drainage Pipes: Connect the drainage outlets to the ground drainage system to prevent rainwater from directly washing against the walls;
  • Adjust the Roof Slope: Increase the roof slope to ≥5% (national standard) by adding wedge-shaped spacers or adjusting the support structure to ensure natural water runoff.
  1. Strengthen Waterproofing Measures
    Apply overall waterproofing treatment to the roof:
  • Apply Waterproof Coatings: Choose weather-resistant polyurethane or acrylic waterproof coatings and apply 2-3 coats with a total thickness of ≥1.5 millimeters;
  • Lay Waterproof Membranes: Lay SBS modified asphalt membranes or TPO polymer membranes on the roof base layer, sealing the joints with a hot-air welder;
  • Seal Joints: Use neutral silicone sealant to seal joints in color-coated steel sheets and screw holes to prevent water infiltration.
  1. Regular Inspection and Maintenance
    Inspect the roof condition quarterly, focusing on drainage outlets, joints, and aging areas. Clear debris from the roof before the rainy season and test the efficiency of the drainage system. If water accumulation recurs, re-evaluate the drainage design or consult a structural engineer.

If the water accumulation problem is complex (e.g., severe roof deformation) or involves high-altitude work, it is advisable to contact a professional roof repair company to avoid secondary damage or safety accidents due to improper operation.
