US Container House Demand

Admin 15 de septiembre de 2026

The demand for container houses in the US is showing an upward trend, primarily driven by price advantages, construction efficiency, and environmental characteristics.

1. Significant price advantage, meeting housing demand
The construction cost of traditional houses in the US is high. Taking a 70-square-meter house as an example, the average local construction price is about $165 per square foot, with a total price exceeding $200,000. Moreover, the construction period ranges from 6 to 18 months, with labor costs accounting for a high proportion. In contrast, container houses exported from China have a prominent price advantage. The price of the house body is about $15,800, and the total price, including freight and tariffs, is about $29,000 (about 200,000 yuan), which is only 1/6 of the cost of a traditional house. This model of 'exchanging a pickup truck price for a fully furnished house' is highly attractive to budget-constrained families, post-disaster reconstruction groups, and residents in remote areas.

2. High construction efficiency, adapting to rapid demand
Container houses adopt a modular design. After being prefabricated in the factory, they are transported to the site via containers and installed in just 1-2 days. For example, American bloggers Shelly and her husband completed the assembly and moved into their house in just one day with the help of a forklift. In contrast, the construction period for traditional houses can last for several months or even more than a year. This 'plug-and-play' characteristic not only shortens the delivery time but also reduces the labor costs of on-site construction, making it particularly suitable for emergency housing, temporary commercial facilities, and other scenarios.

3. Environmental protection and sustainability are gaining attention
Container houses use recycled containers as raw materials, reducing the generation of construction waste and having low energy consumption during the construction process. Their structure is sturdy and can withstand extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes and tornadoes. Some cases are reinforced with steel pipes and embedded in foundations, and even equipped with tornado shelters. In addition, the modular design supports flexible expansion. For example, the 'Squirrel Park' project in Oklahoma City built four two-bedroom houses by combining 16 containers, balancing density improvement and ecological protection, and becoming a model of sustainable housing.

4. Market demand data supports growth
According to Chinese customs data, in the first five months of 2026, the export value of mobile housing products reached $2.324 billion, a year-on-year increase of 47.9%, with the US accounting for more than 20% and becoming the largest buyer. On the Alibaba.com platform, the GMV of the mobile housing category increased by more than 50% year-on-year, with a surge in searches for prefabricated houses and container houses. Shipping giant Maersk also pointed out that although US tariff policies have had a certain drag on imports, global container demand remains resilient, with the prosperity of China's manufacturing industry and strong export growth being the main driving forces.
