How Thick Should the Cement Board Be for Container Houses

Admin 17 de septiembre de 2026

The thickness of cement boards used in container houses is typically around 18mm, but the specific thickness needs to be adjusted according to the purpose and design requirements, with a common range of 4mm to 30mm, and some special scenarios may exceed 30mm.

Common Cement Board Thickness Classifications and Applicable Scenarios

  1. Ultra-thin Cement Boards (≤4mm)
These cement boards are extremely thin and are usually used as decorative or insulation layers for non-load-bearing structures. For example, they can be used for surface decoration or local sound insulation treatment of interior walls in container houses. Due to their light weight and low cost, they are suitable for scenarios with low structural strength requirements.

  2. Thin Cement Boards (4mm-5mm)
Thin cement boards are mostly used in lightweight partition walls or ceiling systems, balancing a certain degree of strength and flexibility. In container houses, if there is a need to divide the interior space or increase sound insulation, these boards can meet basic requirements while avoiding adding excessive loads.

  3. Basic Cement Boards (6mm-12mm)
This is the most commonly used thickness range in container houses, suitable for the base structures of walls, floors, or roofs. For example, a 12mm-thick cement board can serve as the floor base, providing sufficient load-bearing capacity and meeting fire and moisture resistance requirements; 6mm-8mm boards may be used for non-load-bearing interior walls, balancing cost and performance.

  4. Thick Cement Boards (15mm-30mm)
When container houses need to bear heavy loads (such as equipment or furniture) or are used as permanent buildings, thick cement boards can provide higher structural strength. For example, an 18mm-thick cement board is often used as the main structural layer of the floor, directly bearing the weight of people's activities or equipment; 30mm-thick boards may be used for special load-bearing walls or areas requiring high durability.

  5. Extra-thick Cement Boards (>30mm)
These boards are mostly used in industrial-grade container houses or scenarios with extremely high structural safety requirements, such as explosion-proof and impact-resistant designs. Due to their heavy weight, they need to be used in combination with steel structural frames, and the construction cost is relatively high, so they are less commonly used in ordinary residential or temporary buildings.

Key Factors in Thickness Selection

  • Purpose: Load-bearing structures require thicker boards (e.g., above 18mm), while non-load-bearing structures can use thinner boards.
  • Design Requirements: If sound insulation, fire resistance, or moisture resistance are required, the thickness needs to be appropriately increased; if lightweight is pursued, thinner boards can be selected.
  • Cost and Construction: The thicker the board, the higher the material cost and the difficulty of transportation and installation. It is necessary to balance performance and economy.

In practical applications, the thickness of cement boards in container houses is usually determined by designers according to specific needs. A common combination is a 12mm-18mm floor base paired with 6mm-12mm interior wall boards.
