The Toilet Cannot Be Moved

Admin 27 de septiembre de 2026

The toilet is not entirely immovable, but a comprehensive assessment combining legal regulations, technical conditions, and special needs is required. Reasonable renovation is feasible under specific conditions.

From a legal perspective, there are strict restrictions on toilet renovation. According to the "Residential Design Code" GB 50096 - 2011, bathrooms should not be directly arranged above the bedrooms, living rooms (halls), kitchens, and dining rooms of lower-floor occupants to avoid affecting their daily lives. Meanwhile, the "Measures for the Administration of Interior Decoration and Renovation of Residential Buildings" explicitly prohibits converting rooms or balconies without waterproof requirements into bathrooms. Non-compliant renovations may not only face fines but also require rework and rectification.

Technically, moving a toilet presents numerous challenges. The renovation of the sewage system is crucial. It is necessary to ensure that the diameter and slope of the sewage pipes connected to toilet fixtures such as toilets are appropriate. If flat pipes are used for relocation or the floor is raised, drainage problems such as poor drainage or even foul odors may occur due to insufficient slope. There is also a risk of water accumulation and backflow when the floor is raised. The new area needs to have a new waterproof layer, with the waterproof height being no less than 1.8 meters and the number of coats meeting the standards; otherwise, water leakage issues are likely to arise. When re-planning the water supply and drainage pipes, if the pipe routing is unreasonable, water flow noise will be generated, and improper sealing at the points where pipes pass through the floor may lead to condensation water dripping.

However, reasonable renovation is feasible under specific conditions. When locally expanding the original bathroom, without changing its main position, adjacent enclosed balconies or other areas with waterproof conditions can be incorporated into the bathroom. It is necessary to ensure connection with the original sewage pipes and conduct a 48-hour closed-water test to verify the waterproofing effect. For minor toilet relocation, if the relocation distance is ≤ 30 cm, an eccentric relocator can be used. At the same time, ensure that the floor slope meets the drainage requirements and properly seal the pipe joints and carry out waterproofing treatment.
