Standard Container House Specifications Dimensions: What to Know

Admin 02 de noviembre de 2026

The specifications and dimensions of standard container houses are based on standard containers, with common types including 10-foot, 20-foot, and 40-foot models. The specific parameters are as follows:

I. Source of Basic Dimensions The size design of standard container houses originates from international standard container specifications. The basic external dimensions are as follows:

  • Width: 8 feet (2.44 meters) or 2438 millimeters;
  • Height: 8.6 feet (2.6 meters, standard external height; internal height may vary slightly depending on the container type);
  • Length: 20 feet (6.09 meters) or 40 feet (12.19 meters). These dimensions form the basis for the modular design of container houses, ensuring compatibility with the global logistics and transportation system.

II. Common Derived Dimensions

  1. 10-Foot Expandable Container House By optimizing space through structural deformation, the typical dimensions are 2900 mm in length × 6300 mm in width × 2480 mm in height, with an area of approximately 18 square meters. These houses are commonly used for temporary offices or single-person accommodations, balancing transportation convenience with usable area through expandable design.

  2. 20-Foot Standard Container House The dimensions are 5900 mm in length × 6340 mm in width × 2480 mm in height. The internal layout typically includes two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom, suitable for families or small teams. Its length is nearly twice that of a standard container (actually 5.9 meters, with possible slight variations due to structural adjustments), while width and height are optimized internally for functional zoning.

  3. 40-Foot Container House The length doubles to 12.19 meters, with other parameters (such as width and height) proportionally expanded from the 20-foot model. High-cube designs (40HC) can further increase internal height, meeting the needs of scenarios requiring significant vertical space, such as multi-story offices or integrated warehousing facilities.

III. Design Features and Flexibility The internal dimensions of container houses are determined by the length from the inner side of the container door to the inner lining of the end wall, the distance between the two inner linings, and the height from the container floor to the lowest edge of the roof panel. Through expandable, foldable, or flat-pack designs (such as double-wing expandable houses or foldable container houses), the houses can be compressed in volume during transportation and expanded in space during use, significantly improving transportation efficiency and site adaptability.

IV. Application Scenarios and Customization Standard container houses are widely used in temporary accommodations, construction site offices, emergency facilities, and other fields. Some customized models are equipped with double-glazed windows, insect screens, and outdoor leisure areas, and can even form large communities or commercial spaces through modular combinations to meet diverse needs. Their standardized dimensions and structural flexibility make them a rapid-deployment, reusable building solution.
