Shipping Container Transformed into Mobile House

Admin 16 de septiembre de 2026

Shipping containers can be transformed into mobile houses, and they still retain transportability after modification, provided that specific conditions are met and professional procedures are followed.

I. Feasibility and Technical Implementation of Modification

Shipping containers are constructed from high-strength steel, featuring a robust and modular structure. Their standard dimensions (such as 20 feet and 40 feet) provide a natural foundation for modification. The modification process typically involves the following technical aspects:

  1. Structural Reinforcement and Corrosion Protection: Apply anti-rust coatings to the container and weld reinforcing bars to enhance load-bearing capacity, ensuring long-term safety.
  2. Thermal Insulation and Heat Preservation Upgrades: Install thermal insulation materials like rock wool and polyurethane inside the container, and cover the exterior with insulation panels to address the issue of rapid heat conduction in steel structures. For instance, in a rural modification project, double-layer rock wool insulation was used, significantly reducing indoor temperature differences.
  3. Integration of Water and Electricity Systems: Pre-embed PVC pipes and wire conduits, install waterproof sockets and split air conditioning interfaces. Some projects achieve energy self-sufficiency through solar panels.
  4. Space Optimization Design: Utilize foldable furniture and wall-mounted storage systems to improve space utilization. For example, in a 15㎡ project, customized folding beds and vertical cabinets were used to create functional zones.

II. Key Conditions for Retaining Transportability

Modified containers can still be transported, but the following conditions must be met:

  1. Weight Limit: The total weight must not exceed the container's rated load capacity (usually 20-30 tons), requiring strict control over the weight of interior finishing materials.
  2. Dimensional Compliance: Expandable containers must retract their wings before transportation to ensure compliance with international maritime standard dimensions (length: 6.058 meters, width: 2.438 meters, height: 2.591 meters).
  3. Securing Method: Use professional lashing equipment to secure the container to the ship's deck, preventing displacement during maritime transport.

III. Typical Application Scenarios and Cost-Effectiveness

  1. Temporary Construction Sector: Used in scenarios such as construction site offices and post-disaster relief housing. One company can produce 50 modules per day, with a production capacity ten times that of similar factories in North America.
  2. Permanent Residential Modification: Multiple containers can be combined to create multi-bedroom layouts. A Chilean project used double-wing expandable containers, providing an indoor area of 36㎡ when expanded.
  3. Cost Advantages: The modification cost of a 40-foot container is typically lower than that of traditional building materials. In a UK project, modifying a 15㎡ residence cost only 110,000 RMB.
