Aging of Seaside Container Houses

Admin 16 de septiembre de 2026

The aging of seaside container houses is primarily caused by environmental factors such as salt spray corrosion and high humidity. With proper protection, their lifespan can reach 15-20 years, but strict adherence to anti-corrosion and maintenance requirements is necessary.

In coastal areas, the lifespan of container houses is significantly shortened due to severe salt spray corrosion. Steel that has not undergone anti-corrosion treatment may develop rust holes within 3-5 years in humid environments. In one coastal project, corrosion holes even appeared in the bottom steel plates after just 5 years of use. Salt spray accelerates steel oxidation, leading to a decrease in structural strength, while high humidity further exacerbates the corrosion process, reducing the lifespan of the houses by 30%-40% compared to those in dry areas, potentially leaving them with only about 10 years of use.

Key measures to slow down aging include material upgrades, anti-corrosion treatment, environmental modification, and regular maintenance.

  1. Material Upgrades: Using a combination of galvanized steel sheets and epoxy zinc-rich primers can improve anti-corrosion performance by 40%. Hot-dip galvanized materials have a service life of up to 50 years, much longer than the 25 years for cold-dip galvanized materials. These materials effectively isolate salt spray from contact with steel, slowing down the corrosion rate.
  2. Anti-Corrosion Treatment: Apply hot-dip galvanizing to the surface of the container body, seal the seams with sealant, and install waterproof membranes on the roof. Hot-dip galvanizing forms a dense oxide layer on the steel surface, while the sealant and waterproof membranes prevent the infiltration of moisture and salt, creating multiple layers of protection.
  3. Environmental Adaptation Modification: Install drainage slopes and ventilation openings to reduce water accumulation and salt spray deposition. Drainage slopes prevent rainwater from stagnating, and ventilation openings lower internal humidity, inhibiting the formation of corrosive conditions.
  4. Regular Maintenance: Inspect the steel for rust, weld cracks, and other issues annually, and promptly apply anti-corrosion paint and clean the drainage system. Regular maintenance can extend the lifespan by 3-5 years compared to neglect, and is a key aspect of ensuring the long-term use of the houses.

If brand-new maritime container materials (which already have some anti-corrosion properties) are used and the above measures are strictly followed, the lifespan of seaside container houses may still reach 15-20 years. However, it is important to note that anti-corrosion and maintenance requirements must be implemented over the long term; otherwise, environmental factors will still quickly lead to house aging.
