Can the Toilet Be Moved During Renovation?
Generally, the position of the toilet can be moved during renovation, but it needs to be comprehensively judged based on legal norms, technical conditions, and special needs. The specific analysis is as follows:

Legal and Regulatory Restrictions
According to the "Residential Design Code" and the "Measures for the Administration of Interior Decoration and Renovation of Residential Buildings", the bathroom should not be arranged above the bedroom or living room of the lower-floor occupants, and it is prohibited to convert a room or balcony without waterproof requirements into a bathroom. If the new location involves the above-mentioned areas or lacks waterproof conditions, moving the bathroom is an illegal act, which may result in fines and the need for rework and rectification.
Technical Feasibility Conditions
- Sewage System Transformation: Toilets and other sanitary ware need to be connected to sewage pipes with a diameter of 110mm, and a slope (usually ≥2%) must be ensured to avoid blockages. If flat pipes are used for relocation or the floor is raised, poor drainage or unpleasant odors may occur due to insufficient slope; raising the floor may also make the bathroom higher than other areas, posing a risk of water accumulation and backflow.
- Waterproofing Treatment: The new area needs to be re-waterproofed, with the waterproofing height not being lower than 1.8 meters, and the number of coats should meet the standard (usually 2-3 coats). If the waterproofing is inadequate, it is prone to water leakage, damaging one's own decoration or affecting neighborly relations.
- Pipe Layout and Noise: When re-planning the water supply and drainage pipes, if the pipe routing is unreasonable, water flow noise may occur; improper sealing at the floor-penetrating points may also lead to condensation water dripping, which needs to be reduced through sound insulation materials and sealing treatment.
Compliant Renovation Plans
- Partial Expansion of the Original Bathroom: Without changing the main position, incorporate adjacent enclosed balconies or other areas with waterproof conditions into the bathroom, ensuring connection with the original sewage pipes and conducting a 48-hour closed-water test to verify the waterproofing effect.
- Slight Relocation of the Toilet: If the relocation distance is ≤30cm, an eccentric relocator can be used, and the floor slope should meet the drainage requirements. At the same time, proper sealing of pipe joints and waterproofing treatment should be carried out.
- Relocation in Sunken Bathrooms: The floor level of sunken bathrooms is relatively low, and the internal floor can be modified. The pipes can be directly lengthened or shortened for relocation.
Precautions
- The relocation position should not exceed 15 centimeters of the original position. If it exceeds, the overall bathroom design needs to be renovated.
- Communicate with the lower-floor occupants before relocation to avoid disputes.
- Ensure proper sealing to prevent unpleasant odors in the bathroom.
- Give priority to partial expansion or slight relocation plans and ensure that the technical construction complies with regulations.
