Can the Walls of a Prefabricated Panel House Be Moved?

Admin 19 de septiembre de 2026

Not all walls in a prefabricated panel house are immovable; whether they can be moved depends on the nature of the wall.

Load-Bearing Walls Cannot Be Moved

In a prefabricated panel house, load-bearing walls play a crucial supporting role, bearing the weight of the house and the loads from the upper structure. They are an important part of maintaining the overall structural stability of the house. According to Article 5 of the 'Measures for the Administration of Interior Decoration and Renovation of Residential Buildings (Revised in 2011)', without a design plan proposed by the original design unit or a design unit with the corresponding qualification level, no changes can be made to the main building structure and load-bearing structure. Removing a load-bearing wall will disrupt the original force balance of the house, leading to a decrease in structural stability. This may result in serious consequences such as house tilting, cracking, or even collapse, posing a great threat to the life and property safety of the occupants. Therefore, load-bearing walls must not be removed or altered at will.

Non-Load-Bearing Walls Can Generally Be Moved but with Caution

Non-load-bearing walls mainly serve to divide spaces and do not bear the main structural loads of the house. Theoretically, removing non-load-bearing walls generally does not directly affect the structural safety of the house. However, caution is still required in actual operations. On the one hand, during the removal process, improper operation may cause damage to the surrounding walls and structures, such as causing cracks in adjacent walls. On the other hand, the removal of non-load-bearing walls must also comply with relevant regulations, and there should be no other behaviors that affect the structural integrity and use safety of the building. For example, if it involves altering the building's appearance or requires the construction or modification of the residential building's exterior facade, approval from relevant departments is also required.

Special Case: Prefabricated Panel Walls in Brick-Concrete Structures

In home renovations, for general brick-concrete structures, no prefabricated panel walls should be removed or have doors or windows opened in them. This is because prefabricated panel walls are closely connected to the overall structure of the house. Removing them or opening doors or windows in them will damage the structural integrity of the house and affect its seismic performance and safety. Even if the prefabricated panel walls are of a non-load-bearing nature, it is not recommended to remove or alter them.
