Prefabricated Concrete Component Flashing

Admin 18 de septiembre de 2026

Flashing is one of the common quality issues in prefabricated concrete components, arising from concrete leakage due to unsealed mold joints. Prevention requires attention to mold sealing and pouring process monitoring.

Definition and Manifestation of Flashing

Flashing is a common surface defect in the production of prefabricated concrete components, characterized by irregular burrs, protrusions, or excess concrete at the edges or joints of the components. Such defects not only affect the aesthetic appearance of the components but may also reduce dimensional accuracy and joint quality. In severe cases, grinding or repair is required, increasing production costs.

Causes Analysis

Unsealed mold joints are the primary cause. During the production of prefabricated components, if the mold joints are not fully sealed (e.g., bolts not tightened, aging or improperly installed seals), concrete slurry can seep through the gaps during pouring, forming flashing. Additionally, improper vibration techniques can exacerbate the issue—excessive vibration force or duration increases concrete fluidity, making it more prone to overflow through mold gaps.

Prevention Measures

  1. Optimization of Mold Joint Sealing

    • Before production, thoroughly inspect mold joints to ensure bolts are tightened and seals are intact. Apply sealant or adhesive tape at critical points.
    • Use high-precision molds to reduce the number of joints, such as replacing assembled molds with monolithic ones.
  2. Dynamic Monitoring During Pouring

    • Assign personnel to inspect the mold perimeter during concrete pouring. If slurry leakage is detected, immediately halt pouring, clean the overflow, and reseal the mold.
    • Control vibration parameters to avoid excessive vibration causing concrete segregation or excessive fluidity.
  3. Material and Process Coordination

    • Adjust the concrete mix ratio to appropriately reduce slump and fluidity while ensuring workability requirements are met.
    • When applying release agents on the mold interior, avoid excess that could cause slurry slippage. Select release agents with low adhesion to concrete.

Follow-Up Handling Recommendations

If flashing occurs on components, promptly grind them flat with an angle grinder after demolding and check for dimensional deviations against specifications. For production lines with frequent flashing issues, reevaluate mold design or production processes to eliminate root causes.
