Old Container Rebuilt House
Admin 16 de septiembre de 2026
It is feasible to rebuild old containers into houses, and they have many advantages in terms of technology, environmental protection, and cost-effectiveness. Here is a detailed analysis:

Technical Feasibility
- Structural Optimization: Traditional containers directly used as living spaces have the problem of insufficient floor stiffness. For example, Baotou Xinxing Color Plate Steel Structure Manufacturing Co., Ltd. adopts the method of adding C-shaped steel purlins between the bottom beams to evenly distribute the load to each main beam, enabling the container body to maintain structural stability even when stacked three layers high.
- Corrosion Protection: After shot blasting and rust removal on the container body surface, a layer of zinc-rich primer and polyurethane topcoat is sprayed. This protective system can maintain the effective service life of the steel for more than 15 years in the northwest wind and sand and temperature difference environment.
- Thermal Insulation: To address the cold and heat bridge effect of the metal container walls, a broken-bridge lining structure can be adopted. That is, hard polyurethane foam is filled between the steel frame and the inner wall panel, and rubber thermal insulation pads are installed at the connection points of the keels, reducing the heat exchange efficiency between the inside and outside of the container by about 40%. For camp dormitory projects, such treatment can make the indoor temperature 8 to 10 degrees Celsius higher than the outside in winter without heating, thereby reducing the energy consumption dependence on heating equipment.
- Water and Electricity Systems: Container houses can integrate self-circulating sewage systems. For wild camps without water and electricity, sewage collection tanks and gravity separators can be installed at the bottom of the container body to treat gray water (bathing and washing water) and black water (toilet sewage) separately. After sedimentation and activated carbon filtration, the gray water can be reused for watering vegetation outside the container; the black water is converted into liquid fertilizer through anaerobic fermentation by adding microbial agents.
Environmental Advantages
- Material Recycling: Each standard 20-foot container consumes about 1.2 tons of steel. If a one-time poured concrete temporary house is used, the carbon emissions of concrete and steel bars required for the same area are 2.3 times that of a container house.
- Reduction of Construction Waste: When the camp is relocated or the project is completed, the container house can be hoisted as a whole to a new site, with a disassembly and assembly loss rate controlled within 5%. Compared with traditional prefabricated panel houses, which require the replacement of a large number of panels each time they are disassembled, this modular moving method significantly reduces the generation of construction waste.
Cost-effectiveness
- Low Cost: Second-hand containers are relatively inexpensive, and two together may cost just over ten thousand yuan. Moreover, the construction of container houses is fast, saving time and labor costs.
- Wide Application: Container houses have been widely used in areas such as resorts, offices, and tourist camps, and there are also certain application cases in the field of private residences.
