Accessibility of Movable Toilets

Admin 12 de octubre de 2026

The accessible design of movable toilets is primarily reflected in spatial layout, door design, internal facility configuration, and safety measures, aiming to provide convenience and safety for wheelchair users, visually impaired individuals, and the elderly.

1. Spatial Layout and Size Standards
According to the General Code for Accessibility in Building and Municipal Engineering (GB 55019-2021), the standard area of an accessible restroom should be no less than 4 square meters, and the interior space should meet the wheelchair turning requirements, with a turning space diameter of no less than 1.5 meters. This design ensures that wheelchair users can freely turn and adjust their positions, avoiding operational difficulties or collision risks due to limited space.

2. Door Design and Opening Methods
The doors of accessible restrooms should have a clear opening width of ≥800mm, with priority given to outward-opening or electric sliding designs. Outward-opening doors prevent situations where wheelchair users cannot open the door due to insufficient space; electric sliding doors feature anti-pinch functions to prevent injuries when closing. If inward-opening doors are used, an emergency opening device must be provided to ensure that external personnel can quickly open the door in emergencies (e.g., if a user falls and becomes trapped).

3. Internal Facility Configuration

  • Toilet: An L-shaped combination safety grab bar should be installed, with a horizontal length of ≥700mm and a vertical height of 1.4-1.6 meters, facilitating user grip and support; a 650mm knee clearance space should be reserved at the base of the toilet to allow easy wheelchair access.
  • Sink: A low-position design should be adopted, with space reserved at the bottom to prevent collisions between the wheelchair user's legs and the sink; the sink height should be adapted to the user's seated or standing needs.
  • Urinal: Equipped with vertical grab bars and horizontal support bars at a height of ≤400mm, providing support for individuals with standing difficulties and reducing the risk of falls.

4. Safety and Emergency Measures
Accessible restrooms must be equipped with an emergency call device, installed at a height of 0.4-0.5 meters from the ground, ensuring easy access for wheelchair users or visually impaired individuals. Additionally, some movable toilets (e.g., Junhan Smart Movable Public Restrooms) adopt automatic opening doors and sensor-activated water outlets, reducing manual contact, lowering the risk of cross-infection, and enhancing user convenience.

These design details collectively form an accessible system for movable toilets, complying with national standards and reflecting a deep consideration for the needs of special groups.
