Mobile Toilets at the Winter Olympics

The mobile toilets at the Winter Olympics employed two 'cutting-edge technologies': intelligent eco-friendly mobile public toilets and waterless non-flush biological toilets.

Intelligent Eco-Friendly Mobile Public Toilets:

• Touchless Operation: The entire process can be touchless. For example, a wave of the hand can open and close the door, change the toilet seat cover, wash and dry hands, and deodorize, greatly enhancing convenience and hygiene.
• Water and Energy Conservation: They use air-water handwashing and powered sewage discharge technologies, achieving a 70% water-saving rate and effectively conserving water resources.
• Air Purification: The air filters are made of a new material that prevents the novel coronavirus, with a sterilization rate of up to 97%, providing a safe air environment for users.
• Intelligent Management: They are equipped with bilingual (Chinese and English) voice prompts, SOS buttons, intelligent emergency calls, barrier-free handrails, automatic flushing, and other caregiving functions. Maintenance personnel can monitor the operation of equipment in each toilet cubicle in real-time through an intelligent back-end management system and an app. If a user sends a distress signal, on-site staff will be automatically notified within 35 seconds for rescue.

Waterless Non-Flush Biological Toilets:

• Waterless Non-Flush: They have no internal water supply or drainage pipes and use microbial degradation technology. After use, no water flushing is required. Excrement enters a biological chamber through mechanical devices inside the toilet and is decomposed by highly efficient degrading microbial strains. The excrement from 100 people is reduced to the amount of one person's, and the degraded excrement is eventually turned into organic fertilizer and transported away, achieving resource reuse.
• High-Temperature Sterilization: The biological chamber is designed with a special high-temperature treatment process that can quickly raise the temperature to above 60-70 degrees Celsius, killing pathogenic microorganisms and preventing the spread of pathogens.
• Biological Deodorization: Biological deodorizing agents are designed and constructed, using biological conversion technology to achieve deodorization effects.
• Comfortable Experience: The toilets are equipped with air conditioning for heating and heated toilet seats, providing a comfortable user environment.

During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, a total of 119 intelligent public toilets were deployed, mainly distributed at venues such as the Beijing Medal Plaza and the National Sliding Center in the Yanqing competition area. More than 300 waterless non-flush ecological toilet products were used at multiple Winter Olympics competition venues, volunteer service areas, airports, main logistics areas, and public areas.
