Marathon and Portable Toilets
The placement and management of portable toilets in marathon events are crucial. Improper placement can lead to public health issues, while proper planning ensures the smooth running of the event.

Issues Caused by Improper Placement of Portable Toilets
Improper placement of portable toilets in marathon events can have numerous adverse effects. During the 2013 Beijing International Marathon, the 300 portable toilet stalls set up by the organizers were placed in inappropriate locations and lacked clear signage. This made it difficult for some runners to quickly find toilets, leading them to relieve themselves against red walls and in greenbelts, triggering the public health incident known as the "urine on red walls" incident. This not only damaged urban environmental hygiene but also affected the city's image and the event's reputation. Similar issues arose during the 2026 Harbin Marathon, with multiple participants urinating on roadside lawns. Some runners reported that there were not enough toilets and that there were insufficient rain shelters on-site, causing many people to use the toilets for shelter, further exacerbating the toilet usage crunch.
Cases of Proper Placement of Portable Toilets
To address the issue of runners' restroom needs, some marathon events are continuously optimizing the placement of portable toilets. The 2025 Beijing Marathon made positive improvements by increasing the number of toilet stalls at the starting area from 765 to 1,119, along the course from 121 to 169, and at the finish area from 151 to 161, totaling 1,449 stalls. By increasing the number of stalls, the event can better meet runners' restroom needs during the race and reduce various issues caused by insufficient toilet facilities.
Key Points for Placement and Management of Portable Toilets
From the above cases, it can be seen that the placement and management of portable toilets in marathon events require comprehensive consideration of multiple aspects. In terms of quantity, the total number of portable toilets should be reasonably determined based on the number of participants and the scale of the event to ensure basic needs are met. In terms of location, proper planning is essential to avoid concentration in one area, and clear signage should be set up to facilitate runners in quickly finding the toilets. In terms of functionality, in addition to meeting basic restroom needs, considerations can also be given to setting up facilities such as rain shelters to enhance runners' user experience.
