Is the House Structure a Prefabricated Panel?
The house structure is not necessarily a prefabricated panel. To determine whether a house has a prefabricated panel structure, a comprehensive assessment can be made using the following methods:

1. Examine the Construction Year
Generally, houses built more than 15 years ago are more likely to have a prefabricated panel structure, while those built after 15 years commonly use cast-in-place slabs. This pattern is closely related to the development of construction technology in China: in the early days, due to the demand for construction efficiency, prefabricated panels were widely adopted for their factory-produced and on-site assembled characteristics; with the popularization of concrete pouring technology, cast-in-place slabs gradually became the mainstream due to their advantages of strong integrity and excellent seismic performance. However, it should be noted that this criterion only applies to ordinary residential buildings, and exceptions may exist for special buildings or renovated houses.
2. Observe the Pipeline Installation Area
Prefabricated panel structures require reserved space for pipeline installation. Therefore, if there are obvious column supports or regularly arranged reserved holes (such as on the ceilings of bathrooms and kitchens) in the house, it may be a prefabricated panel structure. Cast-in-place slabs are poured as a whole, and pipelines are usually directly embedded within the concrete without the need for additional reserved holes, presenting a complete flat surface. However, it should be noted that some later-renovated houses may have holes sealed, and a comprehensive assessment should be made in conjunction with other characteristics.
3. Check the Relationship Between Walls and Beams/Columns
The load-bearing system of a prefabricated panel house is relatively independent of the floor slab production method. Its typical characteristics are: no obvious beams above the walls, no structural columns at the intersections of walls, and the floor slab directly placed on the walls. In contrast, the beams, slabs, and columns of a cast-in-place slab house form an integral frame structure, with walls serving only as filling members. Therefore, there must be beams above the walls, and structural columns can be seen at the corners. By observing the junction between the ceiling and the walls, the two structural forms can be clearly distinguished.
4. Drilling Detection Method (Requires Professional Operation)
Prefabricated panels have regularly arranged holes reserved during production (usually with a spacing of 30 cm and a diameter of 8 cm). Use an impact drill to drill three holes at intervals of 5 cm on the floor slab. If the drill bit enters the hole, it can be confirmed as a prefabricated panel. However, this method may damage the structure, and non-professionals are strictly prohibited from operating it. It is only recommended to be carried out by a structural engineer before house renovation.
It should be specially noted that brick-concrete structures and prefabricated panel structures belong to different classification dimensions: a brick-concrete structure refers to a building system with brick walls as the main load-bearing members, while prefabricated panels/cast-in-place slabs only describe the construction method of the floor slab. Therefore, a brick-concrete structure house may use either a prefabricated panel floor slab or a cast-in-place slab, and a specific assessment should be made using the above methods.
