Is a Container House a Panel House?

Admin 16 de septiembre de 2026

Container houses are a type of prefabricated temporary building, but they differ from common prefabricated panel houses in terms of production processes and structural performance. One cannot simply equate container houses with traditional panel houses. Here is a detailed analysis:

Definition and Usage

Both container houses and prefabricated panel houses are temporary structures used for temporary accommodation, office work, or other temporary functions. Container houses, also known as container mobile homes, container residences, or box-type houses, are commonly used in migrant worker dormitories, outdoor construction projects, and some daily buildings. Prefabricated panel houses are generally quickly assembled using sandwich color steel plates or other materials as wall and roof materials and are commonly used for temporary housing, construction site offices, post-disaster reconstruction, exhibition halls, etc.

Production Process

  • Container Houses: There are usually two production processes. One involves directly transforming shipping containers, and the other involves structural design in a production factory. In the latter process, the top and bottom are made according to the dimensions of a container, and high-quality load-bearing columns are used to connect the top and bottom to form a frame. Then, color steel sandwich panels are used to form the walls. The second process is the most common. For example, the container-type panel houses provided by Zhejiang Hangxing Green Building Materials Technology Co., Ltd. use high-quality steel and fireproof panels and ensure structural stability through standardized production.
  • Prefabricated Panel Houses: These are generally quickly assembled using sandwich color steel plates or other materials as wall and roof materials. They are easy to set up, flexible, and easy to disassemble and relocate, and can be assembled and combined according to needs.

Structural Performance

  • Container Houses: The frames of standard containers are welded from profiled steel, and their load-bearing capacity is far superior to that of ordinary prefabricated panel houses. For example, the container panel houses of Suzhou Zhongnan use a galvanized steel frame with a thickness of ≥2.0mm. Third-party tests show that they can withstand wind speeds of up to Level 10 and meet the seismic design specifications of GB50011 - 2010 (2016 edition). In simulated Level 8 earthquake conditions, the frame shows no significant deformation.
  • Prefabricated Panel Houses: These generally have poor thermal insulation, sound insulation, and other properties and are relatively weak in terms of structural stability. Some unbranded non-standard prefabricated panel houses on the market commonly use ordinary steel with a thickness of ≤1.2mm and do not undergo galvanized anti-corrosion treatment. In simulated Level 6 wind tests, frame shaking and wall deformation occur.
