How to Protect Container Houses from Lightning
The key to protecting container houses from lightning lies in ensuring that the metal box forms a Faraday cage effect and is well grounded, combined with lightning protection devices and circuit protection measures.

1. Utilizing the Faraday Cage Effect of the Metal Box
Container houses are typically made of metal materials. According to the Faraday cage principle, when lightning strikes the metal box, charges will flow evenly along the surface of the box and be conducted into the ground, rather than penetrating the box and entering the interior. The prerequisite for this effect is that the box must be intact and well grounded. If there is damage or no grounding, the metal's conductivity may actually increase the risk of lightning strikes.
2. Installing Lightning Protection Devices
Lightning Rods or Lightning Strips
Install lightning rods on the top of the container or lay lightning strips along the ridge and eaves to actively attract lightning and conduct it underground. The height of the lightning rod should be 1-2 meters higher than the highest point of the box. The material should preferably be galvanized round steel or steel pipe. The lightning strip can be made of flat steel (thickness ≥ 4mm, cross-section ≥ 48mm²) or round steel (diameter ≥ 8mm), fixed with supports (spacing 1-1.5 meters).Down Conductors and Grounding Devices
Down conductors (galvanized flat steel or round steel) should be evenly distributed around the box (at least 2 pieces), kept at a distance of ≥ 150mm from the exterior wall, and as short and straight as possible to reduce inductance. The resistance of the grounding device should be ≤ 4Ω, which can be achieved by burying grounding electrodes or connecting to the building's foundation reinforcement.
3. Circuit and Equipment Protection
Power Line Protection
Install lightning arresters (such as valve-type or metal oxide lightning arresters) at the inlet end of the container to limit the amplitude of lightning wave overvoltages and prevent lightning from invading and damaging equipment along the power lines.Signal Line Protection
Use shielded cables for communication and network signal lines and install signal lightning arresters to avoid induced lightning being conducted through the lines.
4. Regular Inspection and Maintenance
- Check that the connections of the lightning protection devices are secure, without rust or breakage;
- Measure the grounding resistance to ensure it meets the specified requirements;
- Before the thunderstorm season, focus on checking the tightness of the box to prevent rainwater from seeping in and causing corrosion of metal components.
