Cement Prefabricated Panels in House Renovation

Admin 18 de septiembre de 2026

In house renovation, cement prefabricated panels were commonly used as floor slabs or structural components in early 20th-century buildings. To make them, a hollow mold was created using wooden planks, reinforced with steel bars, and then filled with cement. After drying, the wooden planks were removed to form the panel.

Types and Structural Characteristics of Prefabricated Panels

Prefabricated panels come in two main types: solid and hollow. Hollow prefabricated panels reduce the amount of concrete used in non-load-bearing sections, achieving a lightweight structure while maintaining sufficient load-bearing capacity. This design lowers material costs and transportation difficulties while ensuring strength, making it a widely adopted optimization solution in early construction.

Common Uses of Prefabricated Panels in Construction

Prefabricated panels have diverse applications, such as:

  • Infrastructure: Cover plates for roadside ditches and covering plates for agricultural irrigation channels, utilizing their lightweight and corrosion-resistant properties to meet basic protective needs.
  • House Structures: In some southern regions, prefabricated panels are used for roofing. During construction, workers拼接 (piece together) them block by block from one end according to the layout plan to form a floor or insulation layer. Their high flatness and easy installation make them suitable for rapid construction needs.
  • Temporary Buildings: Floor slabs or partition walls in temporary buildings on some construction sites also use prefabricated panels to shorten construction time.

Limitations of Prefabricated Panel Houses

Although prefabricated panels were widely used, their drawbacks have gradually become apparent over time:

  • Weak Earthquake Resistance: Prefabricated panels are fixed together by splicing, resulting in poor integrity. They are prone to dislocation or collapse during earthquakes.
  • Poor Sound and Heat Insulation: The hollow structure or single-layer design leads to rapid sound and heat conduction, reducing living comfort.
  • Limited Service Life: The design life of ordinary prefabricated panels is approximately 30-50 years. Long-term use may lead to safety hazards due to steel bar corrosion or concrete aging.

Alternative Solutions in Modern Construction

With technological advancements, cast-in-place concrete and prefabricated buildings have gradually replaced traditional prefabricated panels:

  • Cast-in-place concrete forms a continuous structure through integral pouring, significantly improving earthquake resistance and durability.
  • Prefabricated buildings use standardized components prefabricated in factories, combined with on-site assembly, balancing efficiency and quality.

If prefabricated panels are to be used, it is recommended to prioritize reinforced products that comply with current building standards and strictly control construction quality to extend service life and enhance safety.
