Four-Meter Prefabricated Panel House
A four-meter prefabricated panel house is a building constructed primarily using prefabricated panels, featuring specific structural characteristics, historical background, advantages and disadvantages, as well as modern applications.

Structural Characteristics and Types
The prefabricated panels of a four-meter prefabricated panel house are cement components prefabricated in factories. During production, wooden models are nailed together, steel bars are arranged, and cement is poured to form the panels, which come in two types: solid and hollow. The hollow structure achieves lightweighting by reducing the concrete in non-load-bearing parts.
Historical Background
This building form originated in the early 20th century and was mainly used for floor slabs and roof insulation layers. In China, residential buildings constructed before 1985 often adopted this type of structure.
Load-Bearing Capacity
A four-meter prefabricated panel can typically bear a weight of 2 tons, but the specific capacity depends on the placement of the items. If 2 tons of items are placed in the middle of the panel, it is prone to breakage or cracking over time. However, if the items are placed at both ends of the panel, adjacent to beams, columns, and load-bearing walls, and multiple supports are set up at the bottom of the items, the panel can bear the 2-ton load.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages: Prefabricated panel houses are flexible and convenient to install, with high utilization rates. They only need to be transported to the construction site for assembly, which can improve installation efficiency. At the same time, the use of prefabricated panels can appropriately reduce the amount of steel bars used, and since the central part of the panel is not load-bearing, the self-weight can be effectively reduced during installation. Disadvantages: Existing prefabricated panel houses generally have issues such as weak earthquake resistance, poor sound and heat insulation, and a service life of about 30-50 years. However, houses built with four-meter-long prefabricated panels in rural areas usually have a designed service life of more than 50 years.
Modern Applications and Policies
With the development of building technology, cast-in-place concrete and prefabricated buildings are gradually replacing traditional prefabricated panel houses. Prefabricated buildings use modular factory-prefabricated components. For example, CMC combined modular buildings enhance earthquake resistance through steel-concrete integral pouring, and the construction period is 30% shorter than traditional methods. Since 2022, China has implemented a renovation policy for old residential buildings, focusing on repairing and renovating prefabricated panel houses and only demolishing those that meet the criteria for dangerous buildings.
