Container Mobile House Basketball

Admin 15 de septiembre de 2026

During the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games, the Chinese men's basketball team was arranged to stay in temporary houses made from repurposed shipping containers, with rather simple accommodation conditions. The specific manifestations are as follows:

Cramped Living Space

Each shipping container house is 12 meters long and 2.4 meters wide. Each unit is divided into two households, with three people living in each household. For basketball players with an average height close to two meters, the single beds, which are only 195 centimeters long and 90 centimeters wide, make it difficult even to turn over. The aisle between two beds is only wide enough for one person to squeeze through sideways. The ceiling height of the room is relatively low, creating a strong sense of oppression when staying inside.

Inadequate Supporting Facilities

Although the rooms are equipped with air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, etc., the actual experience is not satisfactory. One air conditioner is hardly able to cope with the heat insulation problem of the shipping container. The organizing committee even suggested leaving the door open before going to bed to cool down the room. Three people share one toilet and shower room, which is extremely inconvenient to use.

Impact of Extreme Weather

Nagoya experienced the strongest rainfall since local observation records began, with an hourly rainfall of 104.5 millimeters. Many areas of the city were flooded, with the Shinkansen and subway services being largely suspended, and leaks occurring in multiple competition venues. During the rainstorm, about 400 athletes and staff staying in the repurposed shipping container houses were forced to evacuate to higher ground and had to stay outside for nearly two hours before being allowed to return. At the same time, the rainstorm prevented the team from conducting training for the whole day. With only one day left until the first game, the players were even worried that the shipping containers might be washed away by the flood. The interruption of pre-game training and the limited rest environment greatly affected the team's ability to adjust its state.

Differences in Accommodation Arrangements

Due to the soaring budget for this Asian Games, the traditional centralized Asian Games Village was canceled, and a mixed accommodation plan combining cruise ships, temporary shipping container houses, and scattered hotels was adopted. About 4,600 people stayed on luxury cruise ships with private bathrooms, while about 2,400 people, including the Chinese men's basketball team, were assigned to the shipping container houses with relatively poor conditions. The significant difference in accommodation standards raised many questions.
