Reasons for Container House Issues in Rainstorms

Admin 15 de septiembre de 2026

The main reasons for problems with container houses in rainstorms are their limited ability to withstand extreme weather due to their physical properties as temporary accommodation facilities and the hidden dangers in their site selection.

  • Limitations of Temporariness and Physical Properties: To save costs, the Nagoya Asian Games did not build a traditional athletes' village but instead adopted a mixed accommodation plan using cruise ships, container houses, and hotels. As temporary accommodation facilities, container houses do not have the mature drainage systems, waterproof structures, and emergency evacuation routes that permanent buildings possess. Their physical properties determine that their protective capabilities are significantly inadequate when facing extreme weather. For example, in rainstorms, container houses experienced water leakage, and some athletes were even worried that the houses would be washed away by floods.

  • Hidden Dangers in Site Selection during Flood Seasons: The container accommodations were located in low-lying areas of the port district, which inherently had hidden dangers during flood seasons. When encountering historic rainstorms, the waterlogging problem in low-lying areas was particularly severe, further increasing the disaster-resistance pressure on container houses.

  • Insufficient Estimation of Extreme Weather: The event organizers may have significantly underestimated extreme weather. The problems exposed by container houses in rainstorms reflect the organizers' inadequate preparations for natural disasters. For example, the rainstorm caused some roads to exhibit the spectacle of 'road fountains', underground passages were filled with water, and the entire Nagoya subway system was suspended. These all indicate that the urban drainage system was overwhelmed under extreme weather, and as temporary facilities, container houses were even less able to withstand such severe tests.
