Container House Oil Drum Foundation
Admin 15 de septiembre de 2026
When using oil drums as the foundation for container houses, it is necessary to select an appropriate plan according to the type of house and ensure that the ground is level, the oil drums are stable, and drainage is properly handled. Some types have lower foundation requirements, but basic conditions must still be met.

I. Foundation Requirements for Different Types of Container Houses
- Foldable Container Houses and Fixed Residential Container Houses: These have relatively low foundation requirements. Simply level the ground and they can be placed directly for use. If conditions permit, a cement floor can be poured and drainage ditches can be set up to enhance living comfort. Due to their lightweight structure and flexible installation, these houses have low requirements for the bearing capacity and levelness of the foundation. The oil drum foundation can achieve local leveling by adjusting the height of the oil drums, but it is necessary to ensure that the oil drums themselves are stable and leak-free.
- Packing-Box Container Houses: These have simple foundation requirements. Strip or pier foundations can be used, or they can even be placed directly on the ground. If using an oil drum foundation, attention should be paid to the distribution density and bearing capacity of the oil drums to avoid deformation due to excessive local pressure. At the same time, drainage channels should be reserved to prevent water accumulation from eroding the oil drums or the bottom of the house.
- Residential Portable Panel Houses: These have relatively high foundation requirements. A concrete foundation needs to be poured and fixed to the house with expansion screws. These houses are not suitable for directly using an oil drum foundation because their structural weight is relatively large and they require long-term fixation. The stability and durability of oil drums are difficult to meet the requirements.
II. Key Considerations for Oil Drum Foundations
- Oil Drum Selection and Handling: Use intact metal oil drums to avoid leakage due to corrosion or damage. Before use, thoroughly clean the inside of the oil drums to prevent residual substances from contaminating the house structure or the environment.
- Ground Leveling and Stability: Oil drums should be placed on a flat and solid ground. The bearing capacity of the foundation can be enhanced by filling with sand and gravel or a concrete cushion. If the ground has a slope, adjust the height of the oil drums or set up wedge-shaped pads to keep the house level.
- Drainage and Moisture Prevention: The oil drum foundation should be set up with a drainage slope or drainage ditches to avoid water accumulation causing rusting of the oil drums or moisture at the bottom of the house. A moisture-proof film or a layer of gravel can be laid around the oil drums to further isolate moisture.
- Safety Protection: Anti-slip pads or wooden boards should be installed on the tops of the oil drums to prevent people from slipping when walking. If the house needs to be used for a long time, it is recommended to fix the oil drums (e.g., with steel cables) to prevent displacement due to wind or vibration.
