Installing a Water Heater in a Container House
Admin 17 de septiembre de 2026
Container houses can have water heaters installed, but it is essential to strictly follow installation specifications based on the house structure, electrical circuit conditions, etc. Here are the key points:

I. Water Heater Selection
The mainstream types are storage-type and instantaneous-type water heaters, which should be selected based on electrical circuit conditions:
- Storage-type: It has relatively low electrical circuit requirements, needing a 16A socket and wires of 4 square millimeters or more. It has strong installation adaptability, stable hot water supply, but is bulky and requires preheating.
- Instantaneous-type: It provides hot water instantly and is compact, but has high requirements for electrical circuit capacity. Its instantaneous power is usually between 3000W and 8500W, requiring a separate copper core dedicated line of 4 square millimeters or more and calculation of the electricity meter capacity (e.g., a meter of 25A or above is needed).
II. Installation Location and Wall Reinforcement
- Location Selection: It should be well-ventilated, close to the main water consumption points (such as the bathroom), and convenient for operation and maintenance. The bottom of the electric water heater should be 1.2 to 1.5 meters above the ground to avoid ground moisture; it should not be installed on lightweight roofs or walls, and the load-bearing capacity must be ensured.
- Wall Reinforcement: The wall panels of container houses are mostly non-load-bearing structures, and directly hanging heavy objects poses a high risk. Taking a 60L storage-type water heater as an example, when filled with water, its total weight is nearly 100 kilograms, and the installation wall needs to be able to bear 4 times the weight (about 400 kilograms). Reinforcement methods:
- Locate and fix the internal beams of the container;
- Install dedicated transition brackets or back panels to transfer the stress points to the main load-bearing frame;
- Use a hole saw to make holes, insert bolts, and install large washers and dedicated hanging plates.
III. Electrical Circuit Safety Requirements
- Dedicated Power Line: The instantaneous-type water heater must have a separate copper core dedicated line of 4 square millimeters or more; the storage-type also needs wires of 4 square millimeters or more and calculation of the electricity meter capacity.
- Leakage Protection: Install a leakage protection circuit breaker with a matching rated current (e.g., a D-type circuit breaker of 32A or above is commonly used for the instantaneous-type). It is recommended to have dual protection of a 'leakage protection circuit breaker + an anti-electric shock wall'.
- Reliable Grounding: The grounding resistance should be ≤4Ω. Priority should be given to connecting to the original ground wire of the building; if not possible, a galvanized expansion bolt with a depth of ≥10 centimeters can be driven into a damp area as an artificial grounding electrode.
IV. Water Circuit Connection and Safety Devices
- Water Pipe Connection: The inlet and outlet water pipes should be tightly fastened, and the interfaces should be sealed with Teflon tape to prevent water leakage.
- Water Pressure Testing and Adjustment: Test the water pressure before installation. The normal water pressure should be ≤0.7MPa; if it is too high, a pressure reducing valve should be installed at the water inlet.
- Safety Valve Installation: A safety valve must be installed and correctly connected at the cold water inlet to prevent damage to the inner tank due to overpressure.
V. Safety Precautions
- Keep the installation location away from flammable materials and ensure good ventilation and heat dissipation;
- After installation, check the firmness and conduct power-on and water-on tests to confirm that there is no water leakage, electric leakage, and that it operates normally.
