Container House in the Field
Admin 14 de septiembre de 2026
Whether placing a container house in a field constitutes an illegal structure depends on specific circumstances. Generally, it is not considered illegal if certain conditions are met. Details are as follows:

I. Uniqueness of Container Houses Container houses are essentially movable metal structures, not traditional buildings. They are characterized by being detachable, having no foundation, and occupying no land. Their design and construction features make them flexible in terms of use, installation, and disassembly, generally falling outside the category of fixed structures.
II. Common Scenarios Where It Is Not Considered Illegal
- Purpose and Construction Requirements: If a container house is used solely for temporary storage of agricultural materials and tools, serving as a watchhouse for farmland or orchards, and does not damage the plow layer, lacks water and electricity connections inside, has no traditional foundation construction on the ground, and does not occupy land quotas, it is generally not considered illegal. For example, in a 2024 enforcement case by a local natural resources bureau, it was clarified that container houses with unhardened ground, no water and electricity connections, and used only for agricultural material storage are not classified as illegal structures.
- Local Policy Differences: Some regions regard container houses as temporary structures, exempt from the need for building permits, allowing free erection and dismantling.
III. Common Scenarios Where It Is Considered Illegal
- Changing Land Nature and Purpose: If a container house is used for business or residential purposes, such as being converted into a homestay, shop, or for long-term residence, it is deemed as "substantially changing the land use purpose" and is considered illegal. For instance, a露营 (camping) business owner in Yunnan placed a container house on leased forest land to operate a coffee bar and was fined for failing to obtain forestry fire safety approval.
- Hardening the Ground or Building Permanent Foundations: If the ground where a container house is placed is hardened, such as by laying concrete or constructing ground beams, it is suspected of being a permanent structure and is considered illegal.
- Violating Local Specific Regulations: Some major agricultural provinces have strict controls. For example, a new regulation in a certain province in 2025 requires that container houses in fields must be registered as temporary structures. Even if used only for storing agricultural tools, failure to register makes them illegal.
