Container Houses Are Not Suitable for Long-Term Residence
Container houses can be used for long-term residence, but certain conditions must be met and relevant restrictions should be noted.

Service Life: The lifespan of container houses is influenced by factors such as quality, usage environment, and maintenance. The typical service life of an ordinary container house is usually 10-15 years. If special designs or high-quality materials (such as galvanized steel plate with glass wool sandwich layers) are used, the lifespan can be extended to 25 years or even longer. For example, in the Venezuela Central Power Plant Camp project, some container houses have been used as semi-permanent structures for over 25 years; Qinghai Guangzan Light Steel points out that regularly maintained container houses can have a lifespan of 20-30 years.
Living Comfort: Container houses require modifications to enhance the living experience. Thermal performance is crucial. Due to the strong thermal conductivity of the metal box, a three-layer structure (outer layer of galvanized steel plate, middle layer of rock wool insulation, and inner layer of PVC-coated steel plate) along with an elevated bottom layer design is needed to reduce heat transfer, resulting in a reduction of indoor temperature fluctuations by approximately 40%. Spatial functionality should be reasonably divided. For instance, the kitchen and bathroom can be compressed to one end of the box to form a wet area, while the living and sleeping areas can achieve functional switching through convertible furniture (such as folding tables and drop-down beds). However, attention should be paid to item storage planning; otherwise, the actual usable area may shrink by more than 20%.
Safety and Maintenance: For long-term residence, regular inspections of structural stability, joint sealing, and water tightness are necessary. Rust-proof paint should be applied promptly, and aging components should be replaced. The number of disassemblies and reassemblies should be controlled, as the risk of structural deformation increases by about 15% after more than 5 times. In addition, fire and lightning protection measures should be taken, such as installing lightning rods and using fire-resistant materials for electrical circuits. Avoid long-term parking in humid environments to extend the service life.
Applicable Scenarios: Container houses are more suitable for temporary or semi-permanent living needs, such as construction site dormitories, post-disaster emergency housing, and creative spaces. If used as a long-term fixed residence, personalized modifications (such as interior and exterior decoration and appliance configuration) are needed to improve comfort, and one should accept their characteristics of high mobility, flexible land occupation, but relatively low safety factor.
