American Couple and Their Container House
An American couple named Grateful Off-Grid purchased and installed a Chinese container house on Alibaba.com, attracting widespread attention.

Purchase Process and Cost
The American couple selected a 40-foot foldable container house on Alibaba.com, with an ex-factory price of $15,800, close to $20,000. After adding all costs including ocean freight, tariffs, inland transportation, and lifting, the total landed cost was approximately $28,689, equivalent to just over 200,000 RMB. This price offers significant advantages compared to the cost of building a house locally in the United States. The cost of constructing a single-family home in the US is approximately $165 per square foot, with labor costs alone reaching $200,000 for a house of the same size. The overall construction period can last from six months to a year, whereas the comprehensive cost of Chinese prefabricated houses is only one-third to half of that of local construction in the US.
House Features and Installation
The container house is transported in standard container dimensions and can unfold like a Transformer once it arrives at the site, providing a usable area of about 70 square meters. The bedroom, independent kitchen and bathroom, and hard装修 (hard decoration) are all pre-installed, and it is ready for occupancy once water and electricity are connected. The production cycle is 30 days, and the entire ocean shipping process takes about 50 days. The couple, along with the husband's father who came to help, and a telescopic forklift, completed the installation themselves.
User Feedback and Market Impact
After weathering several strong winds and heavy rains, the American couple gave high praise to the house, expressing their great satisfaction. Their unboxing video has garnered over 3 million views and more than 4,000 comments on YouTube, quickly becoming an overseas sensation, and #Alibaba House has also gone viral. This case is not an isolated one. Data shows that in the first half of 2026, the transaction volume of mobile prefabricated houses on Alibaba.com surged by 50% year-on-year, with the United States being the largest buyer market, accounting for more than 20% of overseas orders. Customs statistics for the same period show that China's export volume of integrated houses reached $2.324 billion, a year-on-year increase of 47.9%, with modular housing becoming a new growth point for Chinese manufacturing going overseas.
