Common Dimensions of Housing Containers
The common dimensions of housing containers can be categorized into three types: standard containers, customized residential containers, and industry-specific special sizes, as detailed below:

I. Standard Container Dimensions (Basic Reference)
Standard containers primarily come in 20-foot and 40-foot sizes, adhering to international standards.
- 20-foot Container: External dimensions are 6.058 meters in length, 2.438 meters in width, and 2.591 meters in height, with an internal volume of approximately 28 to 30 cubic meters and an internal area of about 28.3 square meters.
- 40-foot Container: External dimensions are 12.192 meters in length, 2.438 meters in width, and 2.591 meters in height, with an internal volume of up to 68 cubic meters and an internal area of about 67.6 square meters.
- 40-foot High Cube Container: Based on the standard 40-foot container, the height is increased to 2.9 meters, significantly enhancing vertical space and suitable for scenarios requiring higher ceilings.
II. Customized Residential Container Dimensions
To meet residential needs, container houses achieve diverse sizes through splicing, expansion, or structural adjustments.
- Single-Container Expansion: By splicing multiple containers, flexible areas ranging from 30 to 120 square meters can be achieved. For example, a combination of a 20-foot and a 40-foot container yields approximately 95 square meters (including public areas), while a double 40-foot combination yields about 135 square meters (with a mezzanine design). Some manufacturers offer non-standard widths (3 to 3.5 meters) or curved roof designs to optimize the living experience.
- Finished Container Dimensions: The industry's preferred finished container size is 3 meters by 6 meters, with an internal area of about 18 square meters, equivalent to a standard single bedroom, suitable for independent living or modular combinations.
- Small Container Houses: Commonly sized at 3 meters by 3 meters, with an area of about 9 square meters, these are mostly used for guardhouses, temporary warehouses, and other scenarios with low space requirements.
- Large Container Houses: Sized at 7 meters by 3 meters, these are often used for two-story spliced houses or office areas with corridors, enhancing space utilization through vertical expansion.
III. Industry-Specific Special Sizes
For specific functional needs, container houses have derived special sizes such as foldable, sloped-roof, and emergency medical containers.
- Foldable Container Houses: When unfolded, they can reach twice the size of a standard container, with a length of 6000 millimeters and a height of 2590 millimeters, facilitating transportation and rapid deployment.
- Sloped-Roof Containers: With an eave height of 3.2 meters and a slope of 15 to 30 degrees, they enhance drainage performance and improve the sense of internal space.
- Emergency Medical Containers: Equipped with a negative pressure system, their size is increased by an additional 0.5 meters for equipment areas, meeting medical isolation requirements.
The choice of housing container dimensions should consider functionality, transportation, and cost comprehensively. Standard containers are suitable for general scenarios, customized dimensions meet residential needs, and special sizes serve professional fields.
