Chongyi Container House Design

Admin 15 de septiembre de 2026

The design of container houses in Chongyi requires comprehensive consideration of functional requirements, space utilization, structural safety, and aesthetics. Through modular combinations, rational layouts, and creative designs, practical and personalized living spaces can be created.

I. Basic Design Points
Container houses use standard containers as modular units, with common specifications being 20-foot (6 meters long, 2.4 meters wide, 2.6 meters high) or 40-foot (12 meters long, 2.4 meters wide, 2.6 meters high). The design should select single or multiple container combinations based on functional requirements:

  • Single-container Design: Suitable for small studios, temporary housing, or vacation cottages, with space utilization enhanced through foldable furniture (such as sofa beds and lift tables).
  • Multi-container Assembly: Expand space through horizontal or vertical assembly, forming functional areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. For example, two 40-foot containers assembled horizontally can create a two-bedroom, one-living-room unit of approximately 50 square meters.
  • Split-level Design: Stacking containers vertically creates a duplex structure, with the ground floor serving as a public activity area and the upper floor as a private resting area, connected by stairs or ladders to increase spatial hierarchy.

II. Structural Optimization and Safety

  • Load-bearing and Stability: Containers are made of high-strength steel, with a single container capable of bearing 20-30 tons. However, when assembled, connection points must be welded or bolted to ensure overall structural stability.
  • Rust Prevention: Steel is prone to corrosion, so surfaces must be ground after cutting and welding, and coated with rust-resistant primer and topcoat. In coastal or humid areas, the recoating cycle should be shortened (3-5 years).
  • Foundation Treatment: Containers should not be in direct contact with the ground but should be elevated using concrete piles or steel structure supports to prevent moisture damage and enhance earthquake resistance.

III. Functional and Comfort Enhancements

  • Thermal Insulation: Install thermal insulation materials such as rock wool or polystyrene boards inside walls, lay waterproof membranes on roofs, and use double-glazed windows to achieve warm winters and cool summers.
  • Lighting and Ventilation: Introduce natural light through large floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights, or glass partitions, while installing exhaust fans or fresh air systems to improve air circulation.
  • Water and Electricity Systems: Pre-embed pipelines and circuits, integrate kitchen and bathroom designs, equip with solar panels or generators for electricity needs, and use rainwater collection systems to supplement water supply.

IV. Creative and Aesthetic Design

  • Exterior Renovation: Exterior facades can be painted with colored coatings, installed with wooden cladding or glass curtain walls to soften the industrial feel. For example, the Chongming Orendaland project in Shanghai combines staggered container arrangements with greenery to create a visually harmonious effect.
  • Interior Decoration: Use natural wood furniture, green plants, or art paintings to enhance warmth, such as a Danish man's container home, which features a natural wood color scheme and large glass windows to create a minimalist style.
  • Courtyard Design: Combining containers with courtyards can expand activity space, such as setting up terraces, flower beds, or leisure areas to enhance the living experience.
