20-foot Container Renovated House
Admin 15 de septiembre de 2026
A 20-foot container can be renovated into a fully functional residential house, which requires a combination of standardized renovation techniques, reasonable space planning, and the use of compliant materials.

I. Renovation Techniques and Material Selection
- Foundation Treatment: If a retired container is used, it needs to be thoroughly derusted and painted with anti-corrosion paint to prevent rust from affecting the structural lifespan. Insulation layers such as rock wool or extruded polystyrene boards should be installed inside to solve the heat insulation problem, ensuring that it is not stuffy in summer and meets the insulation standards in winter.
- Structural Reinforcement: When cutting windows and doors according to design requirements, the cut parts should be structurally reinforced to avoid a decrease in overall stability due to local weakening. For example, steel beams or angle irons should be added around the windows and doors for reinforcement.
- Functional Integration: The interior should be equipped with living facilities such as bathrooms, bedding, and furniture, and water and electricity lines should be planned. For example, using integrated bathroom modules can save space, and water and electricity lines should be embedded in the wall or floor sandwich layers to avoid affecting aesthetics and safety by being exposed.
II. Space Planning and Utilization
- Functional Zoning: The interior area of a 20-foot container is about 14 - 15 square meters, and it needs to be reasonably laid out to divide it into a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. For example, using foldable furniture (such as foldable beds and extendable dining tables) can achieve space reuse, serving as a living room during the day and unfolding into a bedroom at night.
- Vertical Expansion: By adding a second-floor loft or utilizing the space on the top of the container, storage or living areas can be increased. For example, a steel staircase can be set up at one end of the container to lead to the loft, with space reserved for wardrobes or bookshelves below.
- Lighting and Ventilation: Large windows should be opened on the sides or ends of the container, and exhaust fans or fresh air systems should be installed to improve indoor air quality. For example, double-glazed windows can be used to take into account both heat insulation and sound insulation effects.
III. Compliance and Safety
- Building Permits: Before renovation, it is necessary to confirm whether local regulations allow container houses to be used as permanent residences and go through the relevant approval procedures.
- Structural Safety: The renovated house needs to pass a load test to ensure that it can withstand wind loads, snow loads, and earthquake forces. For example, in windy areas, wind-resistant tie-downs should be added, and in earthquake zones, node connections should be strengthened.
- Fire Safety Standards: The interior decoration materials should meet the fire rating requirements and be equipped with smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. For example, fire-resistant boards should be used for the walls, and flame-retardant wire conduits should be used for the circuits.
