Xinjiang Outdoor Mobile Toilet
Xinjiang outdoor mobile toilets are sanitation facilities designed to adapt to specific geographical environments and human activity needs, featuring modularity, self-sufficiency, and strong environmental adaptability.

Design and Structural Features
Xinjiang outdoor mobile toilets generally adopt a modular box design. The boxes are prefabricated in factories and transported to deployment sites by road, allowing for short assembly periods without complex on-site construction. Their internal spaces are optimized to integrate basic functional units such as toilets, handwashing stations, and wastewater storage within a limited volume, meeting both temporary and long-term usage needs. Some mobile toilets also incorporate regional cultural characteristics in their design. For example, a corrugated-board mobile toilet customized for a Xinjiang theme park features walls made of galvanized corrugated sheets with hand-painted patterns, combining practicality with aesthetic appeal.
Functional Implementation and Self-Sufficiency
Given the lack of municipal water supply and drainage networks in some areas of Xinjiang, the core challenge for mobile toilets is addressing water supply, drainage, and waste disposal issues. Water supply relies on built-in storage tanks, while drainage and fecal waste treatment employ various technologies:
- Packaging-type: Waste is collected in replaceable sealed containers for regular removal;
- Biodegradable-type: Microorganisms are used to decompose organic matter, reducing odors and pollution;
- Chemical treatment-type: Disinfectants or deodorizers are added to inhibit bacterial growth and minimize environmental impact.
These technologies enable mobile toilets to operate independently without relying on external infrastructure.
Environmental Adaptability Design
Xinjiang experiences significant temperature variations between day and night and extreme climatic conditions. Mobile toilet boxes often use insulated sandwich panels, with some models equipped with small heating or ventilation systems to ensure ventilation and cooling in summer and warmth in winter. For example, in cold winter regions, heating systems maintain internal temperatures within a suitable range to prevent pipe freezing or equipment damage; in summer, ventilation systems reduce stuffiness and enhance user experience.
Usage and Maintenance Management
The sustainable operation of mobile toilets depends on regular service support, including waste removal, sanitation cleaning, consumable replenishment (such as toilet paper and disinfectants), and routine equipment inspections. Management effectiveness depends on the completeness of the service network and scheduling efficiency. For instance, tourist attractions or seasonal production areas need to dynamically adjust maintenance frequencies based on visitor traffic to ensure facilities remain operational at all times.
Policy Support and Development Status
Xinjiang continues to intensify efforts in tourism toilet construction. As of now, the total number of tourism toilets across the region has reached 4,335, with plans to build 188 fixed toilets and 47 mobile toilets in 2024. Mobile toilets, due to their flexibility and rapid deployment capabilities, have become an important option for supplementing insufficient fixed facilities, especially in remote tourist attractions or temporary event venues.
