Portable Toilets on Xinghai Bay Bridge

Admin September 29, 2026

Currently, there are no portable toilets installed on Xinghai Bay Bridge.

I. Design Considerations for the Absence of Portable Toilets
The Xinghai Bay Cross-Sea Bridge spans 6 kilometers, and its design did not incorporate portable toilets into the planning scope. The main reasons include:

  1. Space Constraints: The width of the pedestrian walkway on the upper deck of the bridge is only 2 meters. Placing portable toilets would directly occupy pedestrian passage space, potentially causing congestion and even stampede risks.
  2. Safety Hazards: Vehicles on the bridge travel at relatively high speeds. If portable toilets were installed, vehicles would need to temporarily stop to replenish supplies (such as water and cleaning products), which could disrupt traffic flow and increase the probability of rear-end collisions or other accidents.
  3. Environmental Adaptability: Marine facilities are constantly exposed to high-salt and high-humidity environments, and they must withstand low temperatures in winter. The metal components of portable toilets are prone to corrosion, and electronic devices are susceptible to malfunctions, resulting in significantly higher maintenance costs compared to land-based scenarios.
  4. Environmental Protection Requirements: Sewage and garbage generated on the bridge must be strictly treated. Direct discharge would pollute the marine ecosystem; if a storage and transportation method is adopted, frequent clearance would be required, increasing operational difficulties.

II. Real-world Cases and Demand Conflicts
Previously, a tragic incident occurred where a woman, unable to find a restroom on the bridge, attempted to descend to the lower deck via an emergency ladder but accidentally fell into the sea and went missing. This highlights the potential threat to public safety posed by the lack of restroom facilities. However, due to the aforementioned design constraints, the installation of portable toilets still faces multiple challenges in terms of technology, safety, and environmental protection.

III. Application Scenarios of Portable Toilets in Dalian
Currently, portable toilets in Dalian are mainly deployed in densely populated areas during peak tourist seasons (such as scenic spots and business districts) to alleviate short-term restroom pressure. Their site selection follows the principles of "demand-oriented and easy to manage," prioritizing flat land areas on land with convenient access to water and electricity supplies. Special scenarios like cross-sea bridges, due to their complex environments and high maintenance costs, have not yet been included in the deployment scope.

IV. Future Improvement Directions
To address restroom needs on cross-sea bridges, alternative solutions can be explored: for example, installing fixed restrooms at both ends of the bridge or using smart navigation to guide tourists to plan their restroom visits in advance. At the same time, safety awareness should be strengthened to prevent dangerous behaviors such as climbing guardrails due to urgent restroom needs.
