Xiayunling Housing Container Renovation

Admin September 16, 2026

There are currently no directly publicized cases of housing container renovation in Xiayunling, but through modular technology, housing upgrades can be achieved by combining the renovation experience of local nursing homes with the characteristics of container buildings.

Background of Housing Renovation in Xiayunling Township

The nursing home in Xiayunling Township was built in the 1980s. The original building suffered severe damage from floods. During the severe floods in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in July 2023, the main structure of the building developed safety hazards, and supporting facilities such as water supply and power supply were extensively damaged. In October 2025, Lixiang Automobile donated 6.7 million yuan to complete the post-disaster reconstruction of the nursing home. The renovation included the reinforcement of the main building structure, renovation of walls and floors, updating of the piping system, and supplementation of elderly care service equipment, ultimately achieving a leap from 'basic security' to 'high-quality living conditions'.

Technical Feasibility of Container Renovation

Container buildings fall within the scope of modular construction, and their core advantages are highly compatible with the renovation needs of Xiayunling:

  • Structural Safety: Containers are made of high-strength steel and can withstand extreme weather and geological conditions. For example, the containers customized by COSCO Shipping for a project in Tibet remain stable in an environment of 5,000 meters above sea level with strong winds and severe cold through the use of special steel and thickened insulation layers. Such technology can be applied to the reinforcement of buildings in the mountainous areas of Xiayunling.
  • Construction Efficiency: Modular buildings have walls, floors, ceilings, and piping systems prefabricated in factories, and the on-site assembly period is more than 50% shorter than that of traditional construction. The renovation of the Xiayunling nursing home took two years. If container modular technology is adopted, the construction period can be further shortened, reducing interference with the lives of the elderly.
  • Functional Adaptability: The interior of containers can be divided into functional areas such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens as needed, and living comfort can be improved through sound insulation and insulation processes. For example, in a second-hand container renovation case in Xiaogan, Hubei, a 12-square-meter space achieved wooden-style decoration, an open kitchen, and an independent bathroom, meeting the needs of aging-friendly design.

Cost and Environmental Advantages

The cost of container renovation is significantly lower than that of traditional buildings. Calculated based on the Xiaogan, Hubei case, a second-hand container was purchased for 4,000 yuan, and the interior decoration cost 13,000 yuan, with a total cost of about 17,000 yuan. Even if a new container (with a unit price of about 20,000-30,000 yuan) is used, the total renovation cost is still lower than that of a brick-and-concrete structure house. In addition, modular buildings reduce material consumption by 60%-70%, and standardized cutting in factories reduces building material waste from 8%-12% to 3%-5%, which is in line with the trend of low-carbon renovation.
