Will Container Houses Rust?

Admin September 16, 2026

Container houses do not necessarily rust; whether they rust depends on various factors.

Materials:

  • Weathering steel: Many containers are made of weathering steel. This type of steel has stronger rust-resistance than ordinary steel structures and can resist rusting to a certain extent.
  • Aluminum alloy: Container houses built with aluminum alloy materials are lightweight, easy to construct, and have a beautiful appearance. They also have high corrosion resistance, good elasticity, and are simple to process. The processing and repair costs are relatively low, and they are not prone to rusting.
  • Stainless steel: Container houses constructed with stainless steel materials have a solid structure, good water tightness, and high weldability. They have a beautiful surface, diverse usage possibilities, outstanding chemical resistance, and are long-lasting. They have the characteristics of good corrosion resistance and high strength, can better achieve fire resistance, and are not easily rusted.
  • Fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP): Container houses built with FRP materials have high strength, high rigidity, and a large internal volume. They have good heat insulation and chemical corrosion resistance, are easy to clean, and simple to repair, and are also not prone to rusting.

Construction and maintenance:

  • Construction phase: During construction, all cutting and welding incisions must be polished and coated with epoxy primer and topcoat. If this step is done shoddily, rusting is inevitable in the later stages.
  • Regular inspections: Each year, inspect areas such as welds, corners, bottoms, and eaves. If small rust spots are found, they should be polished and repainted immediately without delay.
  • Repainting cycle: The repainting cycle varies depending on the climatic conditions of different regions. In inland dry areas, it is 8 - 12 years; in southern humid areas, it is 7 - 10 years; and in coastal areas, it is 3 - 5 years for heavy-duty anti-corrosion repainting.
  • Foundation treatment: The container body should not be placed directly on the ground. The foundation should be raised to prevent the bottom from being soaked in moisture, thereby reducing the possibility of rusting.
