Whether to Bring a Portable Toilet to Xinjiang

Admin October 11, 2026

In most cases, there is no need to bring a portable toilet when traveling to Xinjiang, but it can be considered for special circumstances. Here is a detailed analysis:

In most cases, the toilet facilities in major scenic spots and public areas in Xinjiang can meet the needs. In the Ili region, major scenic spots such as Nalati, Kalajun, Sayram Lake, and Xiata generally have public toilets that meet the standards of having a roof, a door, and water flushing. Some scenic spot toilets are even better than expected. For example, the toilet at the "Nomadic Family" at the end of the Nalati Grassland's Aerial Grassland is as clean as those in urban shopping malls. Along the Sayram Lake Ring Road, a water-flushing public toilet is set up every 5 kilometers. The toilets at the South Gate Songshu Head and Dianjiangtai positions are not only clean but also provide hot water for hand washing. In addition, public areas in Xinjiang such as service areas, scenic spot ticket checkpoints, tourist centers, and police stations are generally equipped with toilets. Some places have relatively good toilet conditions, such as those at Diwobao Airport, Jiangbulake, the Tourist Center of Tianshan Tianchi, Kanas, Qiaxi Town, Kuitun Service Area, and Karamay, which are all known for their cleanliness and tidiness. The improvement of these facilities means that most tourists do not need to carry an additional portable toilet.

Under special circumstances, carrying a portable toilet can enhance convenience. If there are children under 3 years old in the travel group (who have weak bladder control during long-distance car rides), elderly people, or those with sensitive stomachs (who may need to use the toilet frequently due to dietary changes), or if you plan to hike the entire routes of Kalajun or Xiata (4-6 hours without a break), you can consider carrying portable toilet bags. Such equipment should be sealed and taken away after use to avoid polluting the grassland environment. In addition, if tourists are used to using squat toilets while some scenic spot toilets only provide sit-down toilets, or if the toilet conditions in service areas are poor and the waiting times are long, you can also carry camping toilets as a backup. However, it should be noted that the use of portable toilets should follow environmental protection principles to avoid causing damage to the natural environment.
