What to Do If a Container House Cracks

Admin September 17, 2026

The repair method for a cracked container house should be selected based on the location and extent of the cracking. The specific steps are as follows:

1. Select the Appropriate Adhesive

  • Cracks in the walls or insulation layer of the container:
Choose an adhesive based on the size of the cracks and environmental conditions. Epoxy resin has strong adhesive force and high hardness after curing, making it suitable for large-area cracks. Neoprene rubber has good elasticity and weather resistance, adapting to different environments. Sealant focuses on filling gaps and enhancing sealing effects.
    • Cracks between the iron sheet and the insulation layer: First, remove the rust on the iron sheet to its original metallic color, remove the loose parts of the insulation layer, clean the residual oil stains with alcohol, and then use elastic sealing materials (such as polyurethane foam or sikaflex-221) to fill the gaps.
    • Extreme climate regions (e.g., below -30°C): Select a low-temperature-resistant adhesive (such as loctite pl 300), which has an operating temperature range of -54°C to 149°C, to avoid brittle cracking at low temperatures.

2. Use a Backing Plate for Welding

  • Damage to the ground beam or other parts requiring welding: Direct welding may cause burn-through of the structure. A steel plate should be placed as a backing plate behind the welding area to disperse heat and protect other parts of the container, preventing deformation or damage due to local overheating.

3. Use Caulking to Increase Water Tightness

  • Container houses have high requirements for water tightness, and their sealing performance may decline after long-term use. Use paint putty, oil-based hemp fiber, or rubber caulking materials to fill the joints, seams, edges of the wooden floor, and gaps between the side walls and end frames of the equipment container.
    • Floor gaps: It is recommended to use paint putty or oil-based hemp fiber for caulking.
    • Iron sheet seams: Aluminum foil tape can be pasted for moisture resistance, and epoxy primer can be applied on the outside for rust prevention, enhancing durability.

Precautions

  • Cracking area exceeds 30%: It is recommended to replace the entire insulation board to avoid uneven strength caused by local repairs, which may affect the overall structural stability.
  • Selection of repair scope: Minor scratches can be handled by a nearby repair shop; for cracks or structural deformations, it is advisable to contact professional repair personnel; if the damage seriously affects safety (e.g., cracking of load-bearing structures), the container should be replaced immediately.
  • Adaptation to extreme environments: In high-temperature, high-humidity, or highly corrosive environments, materials with stronger weather resistance (such as silicone sealant) should be selected, and the repair effects should be regularly inspected.
