What is the Width of Container Houses

Admin September 16, 2026

The width of container houses varies depending on their type and purpose, with common widths being 2.4 meters and 3 meters, along with other customized sizes.

1. Common Standard Widths

  • 2.4 meters: This is a widely used standard width. For example, construction-specific containers, standard container houses, and 20-foot and 40-foot standard containers (all with an external width of 2438mm, approximately 2.4 meters) adopt this size. These containers are commonly used in scenarios such as single-person offices, dormitories, and shops, balancing transportation convenience and space utilization.
  • 3 meters: A common width for general-purpose container houses in China, such as the specification of 6 meters in length × 3 meters in width × 2.9 meters in height, is suitable for construction sites, road construction, and other scenarios. It can accommodate multiple people for living or serve as a multi-functional space. Additionally, some mobile houses also adopt a size of 7 meters in length and 3 meters in width.

2. Special Sizes and Customization Options

  • Export Standard Size: The width of export container houses is usually 2.4 meters, consistent with internal transportation standards to ensure global circulation.
  • Non-standard Customized Widths: Widths can be flexibly adjusted according to needs, such as 2.5 meters, 2.55 meters, 4 meters, etc. For example, professional customized container mobile homes in Beijing offer width options ranging from 2.5 meters to 4 meters to meet special scenario requirements.
  • High Cube and Extended Sizes: The external width of a 40-foot high cube container (40HQ) remains 2.4 meters, but its internal height increases to 2.65 meters, suitable for exhibition halls or housing with height requirements. Some customized containers achieve greater widths through splicing or stacking, such as forming a 6-meter-wide space by splicing two containers.

3. Factors Influencing Size Selection

  • Transportation Constraints: The standard container width (2.4 meters) complies with international transportation regulations, facilitating sea, land, and lifting operations.
  • Functional Requirements: Residential containers need to consider per capita area. For example, a 3-meter-wide container can accommodate 6 bunk beds, housing 8 people with space for activities. Office containers need to balance desk and chair layout with aisle width.
  • Cost and Materials: Excessively small sizes (such as 3 meters × 3 meters) may lead to material waste due to scattered structures, while oversized dimensions (such as 4 meters wide) require reinforced steel structures to maintain stability, increasing manufacturing costs.
