What is the Area of Container Houses

Admin September 16, 2026

The area of container houses varies depending on their type and purpose, with common specifications ranging from 9 square meters to 70 square meters. Here is a detailed classification:

1. Standard Single-Container Houses
The most common standard single-container size is 6 meters long and 3 meters wide, with an area of approximately 18 square meters. These houses are typically used for temporary offices, construction site dormitories, or small commercial purposes, with internal space sufficient for basic living or working needs. Their advantages include simple structure, easy transportation, and the ability to expand usable area through stacking or joining.

2. International Standard Shipping Container Houses

  • 20-foot Standard Container: With internal dimensions of approximately 5.898 meters long and 2.352 meters wide, the area is about 13.87 square meters. These containers are often converted into independent living units or small shops, suitable for single or double occupancy.
  • 40-foot Standard Container: With internal dimensions of approximately 12.032 meters long and 2.352 meters wide, the area is about 28.30 square meters. The space is more spacious and can be divided into functional areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens, suitable for family living or medium-sized office spaces.
  • 40-foot High Cube Container: The internal dimensions are the same in length as the 40-foot standard container, but the height is increased, with the area also approximately 28.30 square meters. The advantage of high cube containers is their greater vertical space, allowing for loft-style designs to enhance space utilization.

3. Small Container Houses
There is a specification of 3 meters by 3 meters, with an area of about 9 square meters. These houses are compact and often used for scenic area kiosks, mobile toilets, or temporary storage rooms, suitable for scenarios with extremely low space requirements. Their transportation and installation costs are low, but the internal functional layout needs to be highly compact.

4. Modular Container Houses
Composed of two or more containers joined together, for example, modular units with each part having an area of about 35 square meters, the total area can reach 70 square meters. These houses achieve space expansion through modular design and can be flexibly combined into multi-story or large-area buildings, suitable for large-scale temporary facilities projects such as schools, hospitals, and post-disaster resettlement. When combining, attention should be paid to structural stability and waterproofing at the connections.

Selection Advice:
If rapid deployment and small space requirements are needed, prioritize standard single-container or small container houses; for long-term living or multi-functional use, 40-foot standard containers or high cube containers are more suitable; for large-scale projects, modular designs are recommended to balance cost and functionality. The actual area may vary slightly due to wall thickness, internal partitions, or additional structures, and should be based on specific design.
