What is a Prefabricated Panel House Structure

Admin September 19, 2026

A prefabricated panel house structure is a type of building constructed primarily using prefabricated panels. The following provides an introduction to the definition, types, construction methods, and historical background of prefabricated panels:

Prefabricated panels are cement components manufactured in factories. The production process involves first creating a mold from wooden planks, then laying steel bars inside the mold and pouring cement. After the cement solidifies, a component with a specific shape and strength is formed. This factory-based production method ensures dimensional accuracy and quality stability of the components while improving construction efficiency.

Prefabricated panels come in two types: solid and hollow. Solid prefabricated panels have a uniform cement structure inside, offering high overall strength and are suitable for areas with high load-bearing requirements. Hollow prefabricated panels, on the other hand, reduce the amount of concrete used in non-load-bearing parts, achieving lightweight construction while ensuring structural safety. The design of hollow structures not only lowers material costs but also reduces the self-weight of the building, resulting in lower foundation requirements and facilitating transportation and installation.

Prefabricated panel house structures were a common method of rapid housing construction from the 1960s to the 1990s. During construction, workers transported the prefabricated cement panels to the site and assembled them into floor slabs, walls, and other structural parts of the building through splicing and overlapping. This construction method eliminated the need for on-site concrete pouring, significantly shortening the construction period and requiring relatively low construction skills. As a result, it was widely used in residential buildings, schools, factories, and other structures during that period.

Prefabricated panel house structures bear significant historical characteristics. Their rapid construction capabilities met the large-scale housing demands of the time. However, due to limitations in early materials and craftsmanship, some prefabricated panel houses had certain deficiencies in seismic performance and durability. With advancements in building technology, modern house structures have gradually adopted more advanced systems such as frame structures and shear wall structures. Nevertheless, prefabricated panel house structures remain representative of buildings from a specific historical period and occupy an important place in the history of architectural development.
