What is a Portable Toilet

Admin October 11, 2026

A portable toilet is a facility that can be moved as a whole and placed in fixed or temporary locations to provide toilet services to the public.

I. Core Definition and Functions

Portable toilets are designed for modular relocation, making them suitable for scenarios lacking fixed sanitation facilities or requiring short-term additions, such as large events, construction sites, and tourist attractions. Their core functions include rapid deployment, flexible adjustment, and meeting basic sanitation needs.

II. Technical Types and Characteristics

  1. Waterless Flush Type
This type relies on biodegradation or chemical agents to treat waste, eliminating the need for water supply and sewage connections. For example, some models use microbial decomposition technology to convert feces into harmless substances, making them suitable for water-scarce areas or temporary events.
  2. Foam Sealing Type
Foam is generated by a foaming device to cover the toilet bowl, blocking odors and reducing flush water volume. The foam serves as both a lubricant and a seal, reducing water consumption to 0.2-0.5 liters per person, making it suitable for scenarios with high environmental protection requirements.
  3. Water Flush Type
Similar to traditional toilets, but equipped with a small water storage tank and a sewage treatment system. For example, mobile eco-friendly public toilets collect hand-washing water and add special agents to achieve a flushing effect with only 0.46 liters of water per person, balancing water conservation and hygiene.

III. Structure and Materials

  • Frame: Made of national standard steel welded together to ensure structural stability.
  • Shell: Covered with anti-corrosion and fire-resistant materials such as color-coated steel plates or carved panels, with a service life of over 20 years.
  • Internal Configuration:
    • Independent toilet pit partitioned treatment system, with urine channels utilizing gravity flow and feces channels cleaned by piston-type scraper mechanical devices;
    • Non-slip floors, automatic flushing toilet bowls, and ventilation and lighting systems, complying with the GBLT18091-92 standard.

IV. Development History and Application Scenarios

  • Development Stages: Originating from the third public toilet revolution (1990s to the end of the 20th century), after 2012, technological routes diversified, forming sub-categories such as antique-style, temporary construction site, and ship-mounted types.
  • Product Forms: Including trailer-mounted, box-type substation cabinet-style, and stainless steel guard booth-style, supporting vehicle-mounted and traditional public toilet renovations.
  • Application Areas: Covering public places such as scenic spots, service areas, and rural areas, as well as special scenarios like disaster relief and military operations.

Through technological innovation and form expansion, portable toilets have become an important part of modern urban and rural sanitation infrastructure.
