Waterproofing Methods Inside Container Houses
Admin September 17, 2026
Waterproofing inside container houses requires comprehensive handling from design, external waterproofing, construction, and maintenance aspects. Specific measures are as follows:

Scientific planning during the design phase
- Site selection and environmental assessment: Analyze climatic factors such as surface runoff, rainfall intensity, and groundwater levels. Determine the roof slope (recommended ≥5%), ground drain positions, and external moisture barrier direction based on on-site drainage conditions. In areas with high humidity or flooding risks, adopt sunken ground drainage and install exterior wall waterproofing strips and moisture barriers.
- Structural and material matching: Select materials with strong impermeability for the roof (e.g., metal panels or waterproof membranes). Walls should be painted with waterproof coatings or covered with waterproof membranes, with seams filled with sealant and ventilation and moisture drainage channels retained. Insulation materials should have low water absorption and low water permeability, and a breathable waterproof barrier (e.g., waterproof breathable membrane) should be installed between the insulation layer and structural components.
- Steam and moisture control: Exhaust water vapor through a combination of mechanical and natural ventilation. In humid areas, dehumidification equipment should be installed, and the direction of the steam isolation layer should be reasonably planned (e.g., installing a vapor barrier on the indoor side).
Focus on external waterproofing and moisture prevention
- Roof waterproofing: Adopt a three-layer defense system of "base waterproofing + reinforcement layer + surface protective coating". Seams on roof panels, edges, and drains should be continuously sealed with flexible waterproof materials (e.g., polyurethane coatings or modified asphalt membranes), and drainage ditches or elevation offsets should be installed to prevent water accumulation. The roof slope should ensure rapid drainage of rainwater.
- Exterior walls and around doors and windows: Paint exterior walls with waterproof coatings or cover them with membranes. Strengthen treatment at corners, internal and external angles, and around window openings. Reserve drainage and moisture drainage space between the waterproof layer and insulation layer. Doors and windows should use high-quality sealing strips to form a three-layer or more sealing structure, avoiding water infiltration channels.
Standardize construction methods
- Waterproof membrane construction: After cleaning the base layer, apply adhesive, paste and roll from far to near according to the reference line, seal the seams, and conduct a 24-hour water storage test after completion.
- Coating waterproofing: Adopt the "one cloth, two coats" process. After fully applying the coating on the base layer, lay fiberglass cloth, then fully apply the second layer of coating for fixation, and proceed to the next process after drying.
- Rigid waterproof layer laying: Construct 2 days after the flexible waterproof layer is completed, using materials such as advanced fatty acid-based mortar waterproofing agents, cement, and sand, with a thickness controlled between 20 and 30 millimeters.
- Top covering treatment: Install steel structure keels and then cover with aluminum panels, glass, or color-coated steel plates. Seal the seams with glue, taking into account both waterproofing and ventilation and heat insulation functions.
Regularly implement maintenance measures
- Regular inspections: Inspect the waterproof layer and drainage system every quarter, repairing cracks or blocked areas.
- Enhance waterproofing: Apply additional waterproof membranes or coatings on the roof or walls to improve rain resistance.
- Seal and reinforce: Supplement sealing strips or glue at connection points to reduce leakage risks.
- Emergency preparations: Equip with waterproof cloths, buckets, and other tools to respond to sudden water leaks.
