Waterproof Membrane for Container House Roof

Admin September 16, 2026

For waterproof membranes on container house roofs, it is recommended to use SBS modified bitumen membranes, TPO/PVC polymer membranes, or EPDM ethylene propylene diene monomer membranes. The specific choice should be made based on a comprehensive consideration of the roof type, climatic conditions, and budget.

1. SBS Modified Bitumen Membrane: A Popular Choice for Renovating Old Roofs
The SBS modified bitumen membrane uses bitumen as the base material, with the addition of SBS rubber modifiers. It exhibits excellent low-temperature toughness (not cracking at -25℃) and has mature construction techniques, offering high cost-effectiveness. It is suitable for flat roofs of ordinary residences or renovations of old roofs, especially in cold northern regions. For example, in the old roof waterproofing project of the Metal Company dormitory in Yuanbei Road Community, Dongfeng Street, Qiaoxi District, Shijiazhuang, a comprehensive plan of cleaning the old waterproof layer → leveling → laying SBS membrane → reinforcement treatment was adopted, completely solving the problem of rain and snow leakage. This material needs to be formed into an integral waterproof layer through hot-melt construction, and attention should be paid to base layer treatment during construction to avoid hollowing.

2. TPO/PVC Polymer Membrane: A Long-Term Solution with Strong Weather Resistance
The TPO/PVC polymer membrane is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) as raw materials. It has outstanding resistance to ultraviolet rays and aging, can be used exposed, and has a lifespan of 25-35 years. Its welded seamless connection technology is highly reliable, making it suitable for flat roofs and green roofs, especially in southern regions with high temperatures and humidity or coastal areas with strong winds. For example, if industrial roofs have extremely high durability requirements, EPDM ethylene propylene diene monomer membranes can be selected. They have a wide temperature resistance range (-40℃~120℃) and a lifespan of over 25 years, but the cost is relatively high.

3. Construction Points and Material Combinations
Regardless of the type of membrane chosen, the old waterproof layer must be thoroughly cleaned before construction to ensure a flat and dry base layer. If there are cracks on the roof, local repairs can be made first using butyl waterproof tape or non-curing rubber bitumen coatings, and then the membrane can be laid. For irregular roofs, liquid waterproof coatings such as polyurethane or acrylic can be used in combination to form a seamless waterproof layer. In addition, the combined use of a waterproof breathable membrane and the membrane can not only prevent rainwater penetration but also discharge moisture from the structural layer, avoiding bulging of the waterproof layer.
