Using Diapers as Portable Toilets

Admin October 07, 2026

Using diapers as portable toilets can be achieved through material preparation and targeted solutions, with attention to operational norms and safety risks.

1. Material Preparation

The core tools are diapers and sealed plastic bags, with optional auxiliary materials such as large plastic bags, small cardboard boxes, and superabsorbent polymers (e.g., components from sanitary napkins or diapers). The superabsorbent polymers in diapers can quickly absorb liquids and solidify waste, while sealed plastic bags prevent leakage. Cardboard boxes or large plastic bags provide privacy protection or structural support.

2. Emergency Urination Solutions

  1. Diaper Filling Method:

    • Open the diaper and remove the internal cotton and absorbent particles (about one-third of the quantity), placing them into a sealed plastic bag.
    • When urinating, aim directly into the plastic bag. The absorbent particles rapidly expand and solidify upon contact with urine, forming a gel-like substance that prevents side leakage and odor diffusion.
    • After use, immediately seal the plastic bag to avoid liquid spillage.
  2. Direct Use of Ready-Made Products:

    • There are portable toilets designed specifically for children available on the market (priced around 4 yuan each), which contain superabsorbent materials and can be used and discarded directly. These are suitable for emergency scenarios or children's use.

3. Emergency Defecation Solutions

  1. Cardboard Box Combination Method:

    • Line the bottom of a small cardboard box with a large plastic bag to create a simple enclosure structure that provides privacy and facilitates cleanup.
    • After defecation, tightly seal the plastic bag and discard it along with the cardboard box. Ensure the cardboard box is structurally stable to prevent tipping over.
  2. Enhanced Absorbency Technique:

    • Pre-add a small packet of superabsorbent polymers (e.g., obtained by disassembling a sanitary napkin) into the sealed plastic bag. Upon contact with water, the outer packaging automatically dissolves, quickly solidifying waste and reducing odor and leakage risks.

4. Precautions

  1. Prompt Disposal: After use, immediately seal the plastic bag and discard it to avoid bacterial growth or odor diffusion from prolonged storage.
  2. Structural Safety: Ensure the cardboard box or plastic bag enclosure is securely fixed to prevent tipping over and environmental contamination.
  3. Child Safety: Keep superabsorbent polymer particles away from children to avoid ingestion and the risk of intestinal blockage.
  4. Environmental Requirements: Dispose of waste according to garbage classification standards. Solidified waste can be classified as other garbage.

By selecting appropriate materials and following operational methods, diapers can temporarily serve as portable toilets, but they are only suitable for emergency scenarios. Long-term use still requires professional equipment.
