Is It Good to Relocate the Toilet?

Admin September 21, 2026

Relocating the toilet (toilet relocation) carries certain risks. It is not recommended unless absolutely necessary, and if relocation is required, strict adherence to standards is necessary to reduce risks.

Risks of Relocation

The toilet's drainage outlet is connected to the public sewer. If not handled properly, it can easily lead to blockages, leaks, and other issues, causing endless trouble. Older houses have inherent limitations in their sewage systems, such as cast-iron pipes with diameters and slopes that match the original layout. Relocating the toilet more than 10 centimeters can easily result in poor drainage.

Key Points for Relocation

  • Relocation Distance: The relocation distance should not exceed 15 centimeters from the original position. If it exceeds this limit, the entire bathroom design needs to be renovated. If the relocation distance exceeds 10 centimeters, the toilet needs to be raised by 15 - 20 centimeters to avoid blockage risks.
  • Preliminary Exploration: Before relocation, a professional team should explore the diameter, slope, and material of the original sewage pipe to formulate a reasonable relocation plan.
  • Sealing Treatment: During relocation, proper sealing should be done to prevent odors from the bathroom from spreading and affecting the living environment.
  • Professional Installation: A plan should be formulated for installation, and professional workers should be hired to ensure construction quality and safety.

Standardized Construction to Reduce Risks

  • Original Pipe Inspection: First, inspect the original pipe to understand its condition and provide a basis for subsequent construction.
  • Relocation Device Selection: For relocation distances within 10 cm, use a dedicated circular relocation device. For distances exceeding 15 cm, create a raised layer with a slope of more than 12° and use 110mm national standard PVC pipes with double fixation at the joints.
  • Ball Passing Test: After installing the sewage pipe, conduct three ball passing tests to check if the pipe is unobstructed and free of blockages.
  • Waterproofing Treatment: Apply two layers of waterproofing plus one layer of polypropylene fabric protection to enhance the waterproofing effect. After waterproofing construction, conduct a 48-hour closed water test and contact the downstairs owner to confirm no leakage, ensuring the waterproofing quality is合格 (qualified) and avoiding water leakage issues.
