How to Move Toilet Pipes
Toilet pipes can be moved using methods such as pipe shifters, raising the floor and adding water traps, or cutting holes in the floor slab, depending on the shifting distance, floor structure, and construction conditions.

1. Using a Pipe Shifter (Suitable for minor adjustments within 15cm)
A pipe shifter is a plastic pipe with a slope that enables short-distance shifting by connecting the toilet's drainage outlet to the main pipe. Installation Tips:
- Timing: Installation must be completed before tiling; otherwise, the floor will need to be redone.
- Slope Control: A steeper slope reduces odors but results in a “low front, high back” floor tilt. Communicate with the tiler in advance to adjust tile placement accordingly.
- Length Selection: Pipe shifters come in various sizes (e.g., 5cm, 10cm, 15cm). Measure the distance between the original drainage outlet and the center of the downpipe, opting for a longer shifter if unsure. Insufficient length may require on-site cutting, compromising seal integrity.
- Sealing: Apply specialized glue at the joints and secure with sealing rings to prevent leaks or odors.
2. Raising the Floor + Adding a Water Trap (Suitable for shifts exceeding 15cm)
When shifting beyond 15cm, a standard pipe shifter is insufficient. Raising the floor creates space for pipe bends. Key Parameters:
- Elevation Height: With a standard 110mm drainpipe diameter, the floor must be raised at least 120mm (including cement screed; 15cm recommended) to prevent blockages.
- Water Trap Design: A water trap (e.g., P-type or S-type) with a water seal height of ≥50mm is mandatory to block odors.
- Construction Process: Cut the original drainage pipe, install an extension to the new location, lay cement screed, and restore the floor with tiles.
3. Cutting a Hole in the Floor Slab Above the Original Drainpipe (Zero-elevation solution)
If the floor’s load-bearing capacity allows and the waterproofing is intact, drill an 110mm hole in the floor slab above the original drainpipe. Lay the new pipe along the wall to avoid raising the floor. Precautions:
- Structural Safety: Verify the slab is reinforced concrete with sufficient thickness to avoid damaging rebar.
- Neighbor Coordination: Obtain written consent from the downstairs resident and ensure the pipe avoids load-bearing walls or critical infrastructure.
- Precision: A professional plumber must perform the drilling with an error margin of ≤1cm to prevent structural damage.
4. Practical Example (Pipe Shifter Installation)
- Tools Required: Downpipe (cut to length), 110mm sealing ring, upper drainage elbow, specialized glue, cutting tools.
- Steps:
- Cut excess sections of the original drainage pipe to ensure a flat edge.
- Fit the sealing ring and measure the对接 (docking) length between the shifter and pipe.
- Apply glue evenly at the joint, insert quickly, and rotate to secure.
- Test drainage flow and check for leaks post-installation.
Tip: For large shifts or complex floor structures, consult a professional plumber to avoid blockages or leaks from improper installation.
