How to Move Toilet Pipes
Admin September 21, 2026
The method for moving toilet pipes should be selected based on the distance, and strict adherence to operational standards and precautions is essential. Details are as follows:

I. Short-Distance Relocation (Within 40 cm)
Tools and Materials
Use a specialized flat or round pipe shifter, prioritizing PVC pipes. Prepare Z-shaped elbows, PVC glue, a tape measure, a cutting machine, an electric hammer, and other tools.Operational Steps
- Floor Preparation: Remove the glass glue from the original toilet installation position, clear debris from the floor, and ensure a flat construction surface.
- Pipe Pre-installation: Insert one end of the Z-shaped elbow into the drainpipe, bend the other end to the target position, mark the cutting point according to the required size, and plug the hole with a stopper to prevent debris from falling in.
- Trenching and Cutting: Cut the tiles according to the markings, use an electric hammer to clear debris, and be careful to avoid the existing water pipes and steel reinforcement structures below.
- Pipe Connection: Use a tape measure to confirm the relocation distance, evenly apply PVC glue inside and outside the pipes, bond the Z-shaped elbow with the original drainpipe, and tap and compact to ensure a tight seal. If the length is insufficient, use a cutting machine to cut off the excess part and reconnect with glue.
- Slope Control: Maintain a 1%-2% slope for the pipes (i.e., a drop of 1-2 cm per meter) to reduce the number of elbows and lower the risk of blockages.
II. Long-Distance Relocation (Over 40 cm)
Floor Elevation Method
Elevate the entire bathroom floor by 20 cm and relay the drainage pipes. This method requires ensuring the stability of the elevated layer and leaving inspection ports.Special House Type Handling
- Sunken Bathrooms: Since the drainage pipes are buried in the sunken tank, their positions can be freely adjusted.
- Cast Iron Pipe Renovation: Use clamps to secure the new pipes and apply sealant at the joints to prevent leakage.
- Same-Floor Drainage: The pipe layout on the same floor can be directly modified.
- Inter-Floor Drainage: Approval from the property management and the signature of the downstairs neighbor are required before construction.
III. Key Precautions
- Sealing and Odor Prevention: Thoroughly seal the pipe joints with PVC glue or sealant to prevent odors.
- Structural Protection: Avoid steel reinforcement when trenching the floor to prevent damage to the building's load-bearing structure.
- Water Closure Test: After construction, conduct a 48-hour water closure test to check for leaks in the pipes and floor.
- Compliance: When involving inter-floor drainage or modifications to the building structure, be sure to go through the relevant approval procedures in advance.
