How Far Can Toilet Exhaust Move

Admin October 06, 2026

There is no fixed value for the distance that toilet exhaust can move; it generally fluctuates between 0.3 meters and 25 meters, depending on various factors.

If referring to the diffusion distance of toilet air being vented out of the window, it is influenced by wind speed, wind direction, humidity, the surrounding environment, and the type of toilet. Inside buildings, in an environment with a relative humidity of 65% - 90% and a wind speed of 0.2 - 2.5 meters per second, the horizontal diffusion concentration gradient of bioaerosols is approximately between 0.3 and 1.5 meters. In naturally ventilated rural toilets with poor airtightness, foul odors can spread to residential areas 10 - 15 meters away. The ventilation system in community public toilets should ensure that unpleasant odors do not spread beyond a 10-meter radius from the toilet boundary.

If referring to the impact of toilet exhaust-related facilities (such as exhaust fans and exhaust ducts) on air expulsion, the situations are as follows:

  • Exhaust ducts: When the exhaust ducts are unobstructed and have an appropriate diameter, the air can be expelled over a relatively long distance. Ducts with a large diameter and smooth, unobstructed inner walls have low air resistance, allowing the expelled airflow to maintain a good state and potentially travel 10 meters or even further. Conversely, when the ducts are narrow, bent, or clogged, the expulsion distance is significantly reduced, and the air may only travel a few meters.
  • Outdoor wind force: Stronger outdoor winds facilitate the diffusion of toilet-expelled air over longer distances. In light breeze conditions, the air may diffuse to about 15 meters, while in stronger winds, it may spread beyond 20 meters. If there are local airflow obstructions outdoors, such as airflow dead zones formed by buildings or trees, it will affect the air expulsion distance.
  • Exhaust fan power: The greater the power of the exhaust fan, the faster and more forcefully it expels air, resulting in a longer expulsion distance. An exhaust fan with low power may only expel air a few meters, while a powerful exhaust fan can potentially expel air 15 - 25 meters or even further.
