Can Toilet Exhaust Flues Be Moved?

Admin October 11, 2026

Whether toilet exhaust flues can be moved depends on the situation, and the possibilities and requirements for moving different types of flues vary.

Top-floor toilet exhaust pipes: They cannot be arbitrarily relocated to other positions. Top-floor toilet exhaust pipes play a crucial role in expelling odors and other gases from the bathroom to the outdoors. Changing their position may affect the exhaust efficiency, leading to a decline in bathroom air quality. If they are sealed or moved indoors, the odors produced in the top-floor bathroom will not be effectively discharged and will accumulate inside, seriously affecting the quality of life of the top-floor residents.

Flue holes: They can be moved, but generally only vertically, not horizontally. Modern flue structures are complex, consisting of a main flue and auxiliary flues. Changing the direction may damage the original structure, affect the smoke exhaust efficiency, and even cause odors from neighbors' homes to flow back into one's own home. When moving flue holes, there are two common methods. One is to relocate them above the integrated ceiling, which facilitates the installation of backflow preventers and range hood exhaust pipes. However, this will reduce the kitchen height, and 20 - 22 centimeters of space need to be reserved for the backflow preventer. The other is to lower the height of the exhaust hole and raise the kitchen ceiling so that the exhaust pipe can be hidden inside the wall cabinet, although this will sacrifice some wall cabinet space.

Building bathroom exhaust ducts: If the position is inappropriate and affects ventilation and exhaust functions, repositioning can be considered, but it requires the operation of a professional construction team. Before installing new ducts, the old ones need to be cut off and rebuilt in the new position. If the ducts are damaged or aged, replacing them with new ones is also an effective method. When purchasing new ducts, consider whether repositioning is necessary.

Bathroom ventilation pipes: They are not allowed to be removed but can be modified, as long as the gases can be normally discharged to the roof and into the atmosphere. For example, the ventilation pipe can be moved to another position using elbows from the floor surface, and the same elbows can be used for connection below the roof slab.
