Toilet Drain Pipe Relocation

Admin October 06, 2026

The toilet drain pipe can be relocated, but an appropriate plan must be selected based on the relocation distance and the characteristics of the apartment layout, and construction specifications must be strictly followed.

I. Relocation Distance and Basic Plans

  1. Short-distance relocation (within 40 centimeters)

    • Specialized relocation devices: Preferably use flat or round relocation devices. A drainage slope of 1%-2% must be maintained (for example, a 1-meter pipe needs to be raised by 1-2 centimeters), and the number of elbows should be reduced to lower the risk of blockage.
    • Limitations of relocation devices: The common relocation distance is 5-10 centimeters, and in special cases, it can reach 15 centimeters. However, distances exceeding 15 centimeters are prone to causing blockages, sewage backflow, and other issues, so careful evaluation is required.
  2. Long-distance relocation (over 40 centimeters)

    • Raising the floor: The entire floor needs to be raised by more than 20 centimeters, and new pipes should be laid while ensuring the slope. This plan may affect the height of the space, so a balance between aesthetics and practicality needs to be considered.
    • Drilling new holes: Change the front-flush toilet to a rear-flush one and drill a new hole in the wall to install the pipes. This requires damaging part of the wall structure, so the safety of load-bearing walls must be confirmed in advance.

II. Key Points for Handling Special Apartment Layouts

  1. Sunken bathroom: Since the pipes are buried in the sunken tank, they can be freely renovated. However, cast iron pipes need to be fixed with clamps and coated with sealant to prevent loosening and air leakage.
  2. Same-floor drainage: The pipe layout can be directly modified without coordinating with the downstairs neighbors.
  3. Inter-floor drainage: Approval from the property management company must be obtained, and the signature of the downstairs neighbor must be acquired to avoid later disputes.

III. Alternative Plans and Precautions

  1. Wall-mounted toilet: The water tank and pipes are hidden inside a false wall, saving space and being aesthetically pleasing. However, the installation is complex, and the positions of water and electricity need to be planned in advance.
  2. Construction specifications:
    • Sealing treatment: The joints of the pipes should be connected with waterproof glue or hot-melt connections to prevent odor backflow.
    • Structural protection: When cutting grooves in the floor, avoid steel bars to prevent damage to the load-bearing capacity of the floor slab.
    • Waterproof test: After construction, a 48-hour closed-water test must be carried out to confirm that there is no leakage before laying the floor tiles.
  3. Risk avoidance: The longer the distance the relocation device is used, the higher the requirement for the slope. Otherwise, blockages or sewage backflow may occur due to poor drainage.

Summary: The relocation of the toilet drain pipe requires selecting a plan based on the relocation distance and apartment type. Priority should be given to reducing the risk of blockages by adjusting the slope and reducing the number of elbows. For long-distance relocations, it is recommended to raise the floor or switch to a wall-mounted toilet. Before construction, be sure to confirm the requirements of the property management company and the consent of the downstairs neighbors, and strictly follow waterproofing, sealing, and other specifications.
