Toilet Bowl Relocation Methods

Admin September 23, 2026

There are several common methods for relocating a toilet bowl, which can be selected based on actual needs and conditions:

1. Short-distance adjustment using a toilet offset flange A toilet offset flange is a tool specifically designed for short-distance relocation of a toilet bowl, typically suitable for moving distances between 10-30 cm, with a maximum of no more than 40 cm. Its core principle is to achieve positional fine-tuning by extending the connection distance between the toilet's drain pipe and the original drain opening. The advantages are minimal modification, low construction cost, and simple operation, making it suitable for small-scale adjustments. However, it should be noted that the offset flange will change the curvature of the drainage path, which may affect the flushing effect and increase the risk of blockage, especially when using a straight-flush toilet. During construction, ensure that the offset flange is tightly connected to the pipe and reserve a slope of 1%-3% (i.e., a drop of 1-3 cm per meter of pipe) to ensure smooth drainage.

2. Relaying pipes by raising the floor If a longer moving distance (more than 40 cm) is required, or if there is a significant height difference between the original drain opening and the new location, the method of raising the floor can be used to relay the drainage pipes. The specific steps are as follows: First, remove the original floor decoration layer (such as tiles), plan the drainage path according to the new toilet location, lay new pipes, and ensure that the slope meets the standard (1%-3%); then, raise the floor to the pipe installation height using cement mortar or lightweight concrete, and finally restore the floor decoration. This method is suitable for long-distance relocation, but it will raise the overall height of the bathroom, which may affect the adaptability of structures such as door frames and thresholds, so space dimensions need to be planned in advance.

3. Using a special offset flange for flat pipes For scenarios involving floor drain-type drainage or the need to hide pipes, a special offset flange for flat pipes can be used. The operation process is as follows: First, cut off the old pipe near the original drain opening, insert the small end of the offset flange into the original drain opening and tighten it; cut the flat pipe according to the toilet's center trap distance (usually 300 mm or 400 mm) and the length of the horizontal pipe, and connect the offset flange to the new location; finally, fix the pipe with glue and raise the slope. The thickness of the flat pipe is relatively thin (about 2-3 cm), which can reduce the amount of floor raising, but the slope must be strictly calculated to avoid poor drainage. This method is suitable for renovation scenarios that are sensitive to floor height or require hidden pipes, but it requires high construction precision.

Precautions:

  • After relocation, test the drainage effect by flushing continuously 3-5 times to observe for blockages;
  • For long-term use, it is recommended to choose a siphon toilet, which has a stronger flushing force and can reduce the risk of blockage;
  • When involving pipe modifications, communicate with the property management in advance to ensure compliance with building drainage regulations.
