Requirements for Self-driving Mobile Toilets in Tibet
Mobile toilets for self-driving trips in Tibet need to meet various requirements in terms of structure, functionality, energy, operation and maintenance, and environmental adaptability under the special plateau environment, as detailed below:

I. Structure and Materials Must Adapt to Extreme Environments
The plateau features complex road conditions and large temperature differences between day and night. The chassis of the mobile toilet should be made of high-strength materials (such as aluminum alloy or composite materials) to ensure resistance to vibration and corrosion. The exterior coating of the vehicle body should be UV-resistant and weather-resistant to prevent aging caused by strong ultraviolet rays. The vehicle dimensions should be controlled within a length of 6-9 meters and a width of 2.4 meters to adapt to narrow roads. The height should be equipped with thermal insulation layers and ventilation systems to avoid overheating or condensation inside. The thickness of the thermal insulation layer should be at least 50mm, using efficient materials such as rock wool or polyurethane. The water supply and drainage system should be equipped with double-layer protection of electric tracing and thermal insulation cotton to prevent freezing in winter. The thermal insulation layer of the storage unit should be thickened to twice that of low-altitude areas to ensure that excrement does not solidify at low temperatures.
II. Sanitary Facilities Should Balance Water Conservation and Environmental Protection
The interior layout should adopt enclosed toilet stalls made of antibacterial and odor-resistant materials. The flushing system should control the flush volume to around 4 liters, and the handwashing station should be equipped with running water, hand soap, and hand-drying equipment. The ventilation system should use passive air ducts or high-efficiency air exchange devices to reduce odors. High-end configurations can be equipped with simple sewage treatment devices to reduce environmental pollution. In terms of resource recycling, a closed-loop design should be adopted, where handwashing wastewater is filtered and used for flushing, with a single water consumption controlled within 0.5 liters. In winter, a waterless mode can be switched to, using biodegradable materials to cover excrement. Vacuum environmental protection toilet technology can achieve 95% water conservation, making it suitable for high-altitude areas.
III. Energy and Power Should Be Self-sufficient
Energy configuration should primarily rely on solar power, equipped with 3-5 square meters of solar panels for power supply. Interior lighting should use LED lights, and power storage should use high-capacity batteries. The auxiliary system can include gas or electric water heaters to meet bathing needs. The power system should use high-performance engines to ensure stable power output in the low-oxygen environment of the plateau and adapt to complex road conditions.
IV. Installation and Operation and Maintenance Should Be Managed in a Standardized Manner
Before site selection, soil permeability tests should be conducted to avoid contaminating underground water sources. The bottom should adopt an elevated design, maintaining an air isolation layer of at least 15 centimeters from the ground surface to reduce interference with the permafrost layer. The exterior color should be a dark tone to reduce visual prominence and avoid disturbing wildlife. In terms of maintenance, the solid storage area should be cleaned once a month, and the liquid storage area should be disinfected weekly. Cleaning agents should be selected with high biodegradability formulas. Maintenance personnel should receive special training for plateau operations, mastering rapid diagnosis and repair methods for equipment failures, and implementing a "one leader, two staff" management system (toilet leader, supervisor, and cleaner) to ensure accountability.
V. Special Environmental Adaptability Should Be Strengthened
The structural load-bearing capacity should be no less than 1.5kN/m², and the wind resistance rating should reach 9-10 (much higher than the 8-level standard in plain areas). The biodegradation unit should be equipped with pressure regulation devices to maintain microbial activity efficiency. All pipelines should use flexible connection materials to prevent structural damage caused by thermal expansion and contraction. In addition, it should comply with the "Quality Requirements and Evaluation of Tourist Toilets" (GB/T18973-2022) and relevant management regulations of the Tibet Autonomous Region, strengthening wind resistance, thermal insulation, and freeze resistance performance.
